Here are some typical questions we get to participate in KB4C.
I don't normally do kiteboarding events - what makes KB4C different?
KB4C is a celebration of life, being empowered by the wind, and getting stoked from kiteboarding. It's a non-competitive weekend (well, there are a couple competitive people) with a festival-atmosphere and just as much going on off-the-water as on-the-water. It's a celebration with a purpose -- to raise funds for Athletes 4 Cancer's Camp Koru young survivorship program. It's truly fun for everyone!
How does the Kite Derby work?
The Kite Derby is a 6-hour course race on Saturday July 12th (Sunday as a backup wind day) where individuals or teams can kite as long or as little as they'd like. For most, it's not a race - it's a purpose to go out and kite in memory of, or for someone. Some people sign up just to kite in the start of the race - an exhilarating 20-30 minutes of adrenaline-rushing kiteboarding like nothing you've ever experienced. Check out the video from last year.
What is the Rider Auction?
If you plan on going the full 6 hours and are in this event to win it, then you are eligible to be up for bid in Friday Night's Rider Auction at the Kickoff Party at the Horse and Hound Pub. Any individual or team who has finished in the top 3 in the past or who is planning on going the full 6 hours in 2014 is up for bid! You don’t have to be an athlete to be a winner! Just be there to bid on your favorite rider or team, and you will be highlighted and awarded when your rider(s) finishes on Saturday! Rider Auction will be between 9:30 and 10:30 at the KB4C Kickoff Party!
Do I have to be a kiteboarder to attend / participate / have fun / get swag??
No! If you want to get the athletes dinner & lunch, swag bag, and t-shirt, all you have to do is raise $500 here or pay $75 the day-off the event.
I want to kite in the Kite Derby, but do I have to go the 6 hours??
No! You can do one lap if you'd like! Just do your best! Some new kiteboarders will just start with a couple laps and build year after year until they are comfortable going the 6 hours. The best way to do the Kite Derby is to get a team of 4 together and break up the race. Then each of you can enjoy the beach activities and still go for the full mileage and the big finish! What else is going on at the event?
During the Kite Derby, we have 3 live bands playing at the big stage, Full Sail Beer flowing, local food vendors from Hood River serving up great food, a Silent & Live Auction, Boards of Hope Art Project, a Kids' Art Tent, TrueMed Institute cooking demonstrations and new vehicles and giveaways from our title sponsor, SUBARU! And that's just on Saturday! Check out the full schedule here: http://kb4c.wordpress.com/event-info/the-kite-derby/
What happens on Sunday?
If we get the wind on Saturday to pull off the Kite Derby, then Sunday is 100% serious FUN! We kick off Sunday with the Never Ever Windsurfed Before Race, a race in memory of our friend and all-around amazing athlete and wind junky, Scott Gehring. This is then followed by the annual Kite Relay-on-the-Green Race - a fun mystery event where little kiteboarding is required, but kite skills are helpful!
Where do the funds go?
The funds benefit Athletes 4 Cancer's Camp Koru - an outdoor and adventure therapy program to help young adults transition and move forward in life after cancer. We are proud that this program came out of Kiteboarding 4 Cancer - everyone who has supported and participated in Kiteboarding 4 Cancer helped build this program that has become an award-winning life transformative experience for many young people after cancer.
How do I sign up?
There are two ways to sign up to participate as a kiteboarder - 1) Fundraise a minimum of $500 for free entry or 2) Register as an individual for $75 or a team for $300. Sign up here: http://donate.athletes4cancer.org/hood-river/events/2014-kiteboarding-4-cancer-north-americas-premier-feel-good-kiteboarding-event/e31208.
