I'm also curious why we don't seem to have the following features enabled to allow people to subscribe to forums... We should be able to subscribe to the Classifieds forum, for example, and then receive email notifications of new posts.

Custom code, yeah. that can be an obstacle...
It'll eventually need to be addressed though, eh? You can already see the SPAM leaking in to the content, probably because we've got a legacy security system? 
And frankly, nwkite seems like a rather vanilla forum template. ... so I'm curious what specific custom plugins are the issue, and whether they're even important enough to sacrifice security, features, and engine updates?
