This is a good story and a good example of what to do if you have a shark encounter. Getting out of the water should be your first priority. Doing a quick wound check was his second good move. He determined that his injury was minor enough to have his wife drive him to the hospital. Based on the photo, it looks like an urgent care could have sutured up those little lacerations though. Overall there is a good outcome to what could have been another tragedy.

I got the same type of injury from a sturgeon at the event site.

note to self : no hand drags when kiting in waters known to be infested with sharks.

Off Delray Beach Saturday, Kurt Hoffman was dragging his arm in the water from his kite board when he suddenly felt pressure on his arm.

"It was less than a second," he said. "It was a hit and a release. It felt like a bear trap. I pulled myself in pretty much like a rocket. And I pulled my feet up because I didn't want to get bitten again. All I see is blood running down my arm. I yelled 'Shark bite! A shark bit me!'"

Hoffman, whose company The Kite Doctor repairs damaged kiteboarding kites, suffered 15 to 18 puncture wounds across a seven-inch span. At St. Mary's Medical Center in West Palm Beach, he was given antibiotics, in addition to treatment for his wound, because sharks' mouths team with bacteria.

On Friday a nine-year-old boy on a surf board or boogie board was bitten on his foot and ankle, said Lt. Anthony Giarrusso, of North Palm Beach Fire Rescue. He was taken to St. Mary's for treatment.

Every spring a huge number of blacktip and spinner sharks migrate from their winter homes off Broward and Palm Beach counties north, with many going as far as the Carolinas.

I just moved from Portland to this area in December. I kited the same spot in Delray two days after the fact, along with a large group that was out for the 25knot wind, and overhead waves.

What happened in Stuart was tragic, and most likely the work of a bull shark or similar. Unfortunately getting just that much father north increases your chances of a run in with larger shark.

The likelihood of getting nipped at by anything bigger than a spinner shark off Delray is very slim.
