Going to the area last week in March with the family. 4/5 kite and the youngest (10) will chill on the beach. Which one for the whole family with the most authentic Mexican experience? And how far to drive from Tulum to Isla Blanca? Is there one spot better for learning if I decide to let the 10yo go for it. Any tips would be appreciated. I'll be bring 6-17m kites.

Cheers!

I just got back from Tulum and could answer any specific questions you have on that location, maybe drop me a PM. I have no idea about Isla Blanca however, sorry.

About Tulum
- Lots of stuff to see and do for all of the family – inland caves for snorkeling, ruins, SUPing, fishing, Akumal town (check out the lagoon for sure)
- I’ve had good food in every place I tried but I thought the best place was Aguachiles towards the south end of the town.
- Pretty chill atmosphere in Tulum compared to Del Carmen and any of the places on the west coast I’ve been to.

Kiting in Tulum
- I’ve been to playa Del Carmen once and Tulum twice now and I can say from experience that neither are good wind destinations.
- Best chance of wind is between 6am/9am or 5pm to 6.30pm and you’re talking under 14knots if it does blow. Out of three trips I have seen it go above 20 once when it was northerly.
- This last trip I got out for four sessions and it was all onshore or side-on wind. So, depending on where your son is on his learning curve this would be good for learning
- Couple of rock/coral outcroppings to worry about depending on where along the beach you are

Cheers,
Jer

Last time I went to Isla Blanca, two years ago, the restaurant at the end of the road had closed down. This meant a mile hike to the kite spot. Not so bad going, f&*%ing miserable if you don't keep lots of liquids for the return hike. If you can find a 4WD, you can drive to the launch still, I've not found one to rent in Cancun. Sad There was a guy on the right hand side of the road who had paid parking about 100 yards south of the closed restaurant. For 5 bucks just a hell of a deal knowing your car will still be there when you get back. Check with the guys at Ikarus Kiteboarding for the latest scoop.

I hope that restaurant has re-opened. Worth the trip all by itself. Talk about authentic Mexican out in the middle of nowhere. They spoke not a word of English, so it was a crap shoot what you were going to get served! Smile But it was all so good, who could care? You don't want to be on the Lagoon side of the isthmus at sunset, unless you like being a mosquito blood donor. Just move to the ocean side and tip a few cervazas. No swell that I have ever seen up there; just confused chop on the ocean side.
