I got a free trip to Oahu 2/25-3/2 thanks to my girlfriends company. Anyone have any good recommendations on where to stay? We need to be close to Honolulu as she will have to work for a few hours everyday while I get to go play:) |

If it is your first time - probably best to just stay in Honolulu. Nothing is really that far away. Your closest kiting would be in Kailua - which would be only 20 minutes from Honolulu. In Honolulu - you have world famous Waikiki Beach that is fantastic for people watching - there is tons of shopping for the GF - tons of night life. From Honolulu - you are only 15 minutes from Hanauma Bay for snorkeling - 10 minutes from a historic and scenic hike at Diamond Head.
If you are looking for something more low key - I would stay in Kailua. Not becuase that is a kiting spot - but you are close to Honolulu and Kailua bay has some great beaches for hanging out, SUP, kayaking, etc.
Sadly - kiting on Oahu is pretty hit and miss. So I would focus on doing all the other stuff Oahu has to offer with the GF. If you are lucky - the wind will come up and you will get to kite. If there is wind - make sure to talk to the locals - there are some specific ways you are supposed to launch and kite at Kailua. |

second all of Blazeheliski's advice....Waikiki has to be one of the best possible places ever to people watch and is fun for a couple days if you take it for what it is We bailed out a few days early on Molokai last trip so stayed 4 days on Waikiki before moving to a VRBO in Kailua (more our speed but ultimately all was quite fun). Also encountered Blazeheliski's assessment hit or miss to kite Oahu. Fun light wind stuff with kayaking/snorkeling/diving - including kayaking to the Mokulua islands...if you go super early you can have the place to yourselves.
Have a great trip! |

If you are looking for specific hotel ideas and you decide to stay in Honolulu, there are many choices.
If her company if paying for it all and there is no price limit - it is pretty hard to beat the Moana Surfrider Resort and Spa (Westin). It puts you right on Waikiki Beach in the middle of all the restaurants and action. The Royal Hawaiian is pretty nice also. Historical, newly restored and right next to the Westin.
If you are looking for some deals - we like to stay at the other end of Waikiki at the Aston Waikiki Beach Hotel. It is right across from the zoo so the animals get to wake you up bright an early. Although being on Pacific time - you usually wake up at sunrise in Hawaii anyway. |
