Hey folks I am heading to Summit county in Colorado in a couple of weeks. I am taking some kites and hope to score some frozen lake kiting on Lake Dillon. I have never kited there, if any of you have some info on wind direction, average wind speeds, and areas that are great to launch I would be stoked to hear from you.
I was planning on taking a 7.5 and 12m to cover the different ends if the ranges. I am a experienced snowkiter just looking for more info!

lots of space

easy access from a boat ramp type park i believe.

I think there was a vid posted not too long ago from a Colorado spot near there but with actual terrain and cleaner wind.

Snowkiting!

I recently kited near Buena Vista, just on a mild sloped meadow near my parents' cabin there is a public access point. I was overpowered on a 12--only kite I took with me--but I didn't get hurt. For me it was maybe second time snowkiting (first attempt was on Hood and it was short) and it was hilarious trying to boost and roll, so different with 2 skis vs wakeboard.

FYI--Local paper had a piece on "the new sport of kitesurfing" on Twin Lakes area near Leadville--so that must be a spot too (I haven't been before), and its very near Dillon (maybe 30-45 min drive) if you need a backup.

I spoke with the Kiting store (Ozone dealers, look it up that way) there in Silverton/Dillon, and they said they mostly rode on 12-14m. That wind is supposedly most frequent (on bluebird days especially) and most consistent. If you're on an 8 meter its much more variable, frontal winds, also more dangerous (but you're an experienced snowkiter so maybe not).

Enjoy!

Its big and flat. The launch is at the Farmer's Corner area at the intersection of Swan Mountain Rd and Hwy 9 between Breckenridge and Frisco. If you don't mind a big open frozen and snow covered lake Lake Dillon is awesome.
Colorado has so many options to snowkite and very few of them have been discovered yet. There is a bunch of terrain up at Loveland Pass that I bet would be amazing. Same thing with Rabbit Ears and Vail Passes depending on wind direction. There are also some high plateaus out of Avon and Gypsum that look like they have potential. Ask the ranchers before heading out onto their land though.
I am sure there are lot more great spots down near Wolff Creek Pass, Gunnison, Crested Butte, Telluride, etc. etc. etc.
Give us a report when you get back.

Thanks for the lowdown fellas! I actually used to live in Breck early 2000's. But kiting was an infant back then, especially on snow so I never saw any exposure. To tell you the truth my eyes werent open to it either, just a young snowboard punk!
As for Lake Dillons snowkiting potential it should be fun and I like that its in town, we are really only going there for a slopeside wedding and I was able to convince the wife that I should go kiting! Smile

Ill also be driving out to Camas Prairie in March if the snow starts dumping again if you'all are interested.
