Ha Ha-- that's a good one-- I was pretty freaked out when I rolled up in my subaru. My hands were sofa king cold, and I was just taking pictures. Good thing "someone" didn't have their pump, because I hate calling 911--especially regarding a kiter... Wink

Animal...aka...Honey Badger....just doesn't care about something like hypothermia when it comes to getting his session. One side of the highway has climbers scaling ice walls and on the other side Airon is tearing apart his car looking for his pump. Bruddah, that's a sign it's best to stay in the car but ya gotta respect the commitment. Laughing

last week ron and I hit dalton for an early december session.
it had just hit 32 degrees according to the rooster rock sensor.
I wanted to try out some new pata lobster mitts I got earlier in the week from cleanline. they're awesome btw!
anyhow what I experienced was a little bit more extreme than any other cold water session. when its at freezing, or colder, water turns to ice very quick. even though I was in control of my kite and kept things conservative, I watched the ice form on my control bar. I can see where cold water kiting can cause ice to form on the depower rope and also your release mechanism. with that in mind, I stayed on the oregon side of the river and limited my session to 30 minutes. afterwards I waded out and tested my drysuit for warmth while floating on my back. not bad for 5 minutes, but having to perform a self rescue in the middle of the columbia would def be a different story.
Knowing how it feels to ride in that cold of a condition, I'll hold off now until temps return to above 40.

it's nice to know the community cares

Tomorrow looks like it has potential...lol

I'll stay close to Oregon side and keep it short. No death wish here.

Good observations Jim. I kite all winter but upper 30's air temp and above is what I consider safe and somewhat enjoyable. When ice starts forming on your gear it's time to get off the water for a number of reasons. Safety being number one. Water temp is not the issue so much with proper attire. I swam for 30 minutes at Rufus in 37 degree water in my Drysuit and was still warm but exhausted. Didn't do it for fun, was trying to retrieve my board, long story. So I agree that above 40 is a good temp to watch for. Where's our snow? Time to get that awesome "Brad" sled out and go Snowkiting!

drysuits ruled the beach today. still a little bit intense for some, however for those diehards that need to get their fix, today worked great. just picked up a new 5m so finally got the opportunity to ride it today. when's the thaw take place around here because I burned some serious calories just walking out there today Laughing
