Ok, So its time to upgrade mabey from the rufus meth lab. After going down and doing the winterization on the rv, I have decided I want a Newer RV.
Who do you guys use in porland, and does anyone have a idea how to get a cheaper line on one of the dodge based disel rv's like a view?

craigslist has a bunch- but they're still $40-$50K
I bought a road trek (much smaller, good for Baja driving) at Johnson RV in Sandy. Not nearly as roomie as the View though. I was looking at the View, they're great, but not as easy to drive in Mexico. I like narrow vehicles for baja roads. I get 20+ mpg, the view gets 16

Rialta, has a eurovan base. weakness is the trans.
When I am dreaming of one I always come back to a 27 foot class A coach @ 15,000$ and just pay the gas man.

depends on how big a rig you want.
and if you are willing to travel.
if you are, check out Sun City near Phoenix. lots of older folks buy an RV up north to live the dream. then find out she can not climb the steps and he can not see well enough to drive it. they make 1 trip down there and sell them, usually really cheap. worth the plane ticket to get there easily.
hell, you could probably make a living going down there, buying one cheap, drive it up and re-sell it.

I'll second going to Arizona to find a rig. Lots and lots of them down there. You can pick up a bit older class A rig for under 20,000 that will let you pack in all of the toys you need to keep the family happy. Will probably only get about 8 to 10 mph but if you're not moving around every weekend it's not too bad.

That hood river place is awful. crowded, alligators, $15 hamburgers. Stay away.
No really class A with a slide, PDX craigslist usually has several low mile units for under $20K.
Leave the RV in Rufus and drive car to HR.

You know...... Its kinda of a debate right? IFFFFF I went new, I would be torn between a class C with a V10 and the room, VS the Gas mileage of a view... The view is more expensive, but gets better mileage, allowing more travel, but the C would give you more money to spend in gas....
But then again, financially..... Buying a 15000 RV and all the saveings combined could pay for a lot of maintenance and fuel.....
I feel the reality is having a paid off older class C is the way to go...... No payment.... No paymen t..... no payment.... I can work on a american v10 blah blah....
Mabey another summer in the meth lab...

One more thing to consider is the diesel/gas price difference. It seems to be around $0.50 per gallon and that kinda kills most of your savings:
Sprinter: 1000 miles/20 mpg = 50 gal*3.5 $/gal = $175
V10: 1000/12mpg = 83*3 $/gal = $249

I think it all depends on how many miles you intend to drive and what the price diff is.
50000 miles only saves you $3750 on gas cost

So approx 7000 for a 100000 miles over "X" years, VS resale value....
I guess I'm still seeing that a GAS mabey bought used=most fun for the money and reliabilty
More thoughts?

Fri Nov 29, 13 5:51 am Buy a gas motor RV, not a diesal |
|
|
I bought a diesel pickup years ago when fuel was cheap. The initial purchase price was much higher than the same rig with a gas motor. This year I had to spend $5000 for new injectors. The fuel mileage over the years will never make up for this expense. A gas RV like the Craigs list one above is a much better value than a diesel version.

My thoughts were that I prettyuch did a full rebuild on my methblab, so I could do all the fluids and general maintenance on a v10....

This a simple excel exercise.
This is if you were able to get a view for 45K and you kept them for 5 years. 30K miles in 5 years is a shit load, which you will probably not meet but I used that number for an example. What can you do with the left over 15k if you bought a gas powered v10? That is a lot of new kites, toys for the kids, and or a few trips to maui.
