Found the pictures, see first post link. . . one of those days that Rooster is nuked out. If your jones’in for a session, one can point sail at Broughton Beach on Marine Drive. WATCH OUT for broken glass and other trash. And if you want deal with an insurance claim, make sure to leave something visible in your car while your out kiting as some of the beach trash have legs and arms.
Broughton Beach can be the take-out for a downwinder on the Oregon side. The exciting part of the downwinder would be launching from the riprap rocky banks. Probably need a kite caddie and have someone hold the kite on top on the dike and have you being in the water. Don’t know of any sandy launches and or if Chinook boat landing would work. I think that boat ramp is like 181st/Blue lake.
I’ve point sailed before at Broughton beach, but have never done a downwinder and or went under the i-205 bridge before.

. . . To whoever wants to know: Broughton Beach is renovated since the original write up. Also known as "Marine Drive", it's right off Marine Drive. Easy access from East Portland, closer than Rooster. Last time it was 4m at Rooster, it was 8-10m there, I had a great little lunchbreak session on booted board and then surfboard as it got lighter.
Not sure what else to say about it. Can self launch and land there, it's wide open, just a bit gravelly so the leading edge will take a little abuse on the launch. Great amenities--I changed in the bathroom that was clean and had running water sink.
PM me--happy to help my peeps get out there |

We were at Broughton Beach (BB) friday. RR NUked out. At BB U could see white caps nearby BUT right at BB weird wind shadow, Not even white caps. We thought with RR nuked out it would be good.
I have no Idea is there not 30m distance from river to I-205.
Chinook landing seems doable for a downer to BB. |

I was keeping an eye on it on ikite...all the sensors from Stevenson to the coast were reading east except the airport and the Vanc. Airstrip across the river. For some strange reason they where reading NW which made no sense. It was almost like a back eddie/wind Shadow. I think it eventually turned later in the afternoon. Very strange. |

Yeah, BB is often hit or miss. If there is any south in the wind you need to go across the river to Wintler. Any north in the wind, then try BB. And don't go too far across the river if the wind is light. The wind shadow can be very sharply defined & you can ride right out of the wind pretty easily. I did that a few years back, absolutely zero wind as I crossed the line. I drifted west of my kite--which was just floating--then the kite caught a puff and rolled towards me. Total rat's nest. Swift current pulled me away from the beach pretty quickly. I was glad I had cab fare in my pocket, but a construction worker took pity on me & pulled me out with a construction work boat. Water temp that day was 35 and air temp was 22. Needless to say, I brought the guy a bottle of Chivas the next day! |
