Can anyone recommend a good shoulder doc? I prefer the type that look to fix the problem with PT or other means prior to cutting. But really just want a good doc.
cheers, |

Dr. Herzka @ OHSU orthopedics, she has an office out at Beaverton. She is an expert in shoulder repair and will do a thorough evaluation before suggesting surgery. In my case she recommended PT only and gave a diagnosis to the PT for proper rehab. |

Get a long theraband and put it in your car. Do shoulder exercises while you drive. 5 minutes a day will do so much. I was told by multiple dr's that I had to have surgery after two dislocations and rotator cuff injuries. If you keep it strong and in alignment I doubt you need surgery. The key for me was doing exercises in the car it was the only time I would motivate. If you want to see what I do I could make a video for u. jmo |

I would be interested if you did a vid or could post a link to an existing vid of the exercise as I'm in a similar boat.
Thanks! |

I'm No Doctor... but if you're lookin for free advice, this has worked for me.
After decades of racquetball (and some tennis) I pretty much turned my shoulder into a shredded mess.
Whenever my shoulder would get too sore I would perform a simple exercise that usually put me back into the court within a week.
Starting with my arm by my side I would flex my shoulder muscles as tight as I could. While continuously flexing my shoulder muscles I would slowly move my arm up and down. I would attempt to perform this exercise for about 5 minutes in the morning, and repeat again in the evening.
p.s. I don't play racquetball or tennis anymore (now I kite), and shoulder is much better (without surgury).
Good Luck!!! _________________ Kiting starts at 40MPH |

I met with Dr. Herzka @ OHSU orthopedics and she is great. Thanks for the referal Consumer. She is a active rock climber and her husband is an avid pole dancer so she gets it.
Hopefully PT will do the trick!!!! |

Thought I would post on here since I recently did shoulder surgery #2...
By chance my first was Dr. Herzka, second time Dr Pelmas at Kaiser Sunnyside.
Both surgeries were to fix chronic dislocation problems on my left shoulder. The first one worked for a couple of years but then started dislocating again after a bad kiteboarding crash.
The second time they did a latarjet repair which involves taking cadaver bone and using it to repair bone damage and make a better socket for the shoulder so it doesn't come out.
So far the second time around has been much less pain and my PT is progressing well.
Surgery is best avoided but if you have dislocations more than a few times its a good idea to do it IMO. I had probably 50+ dislocations over the years, last time in my sleep
Keep those shoulders healthy and strong. They say I will probably need to have mine replaced some day because of arthritis. Tough to hear at 33... |

Happy to hear your shoulder feels better.
If shoulder osteoarthritis is anything like knee osteoarthritis - research has shown that regular running for example, can be beneficial or neutral rather than harmful as our logic might suggest. |

Hi ,
my 2 cts ,
Swim Swim Swim
Fixed my shoulder problem .
I hit the snowpack hard on my side while snowboarding and my arm went behind me and overextended , man that hurt . No Doc visited .
I was not healed yet and I did it again wakeboarding a couple of months later. After several months of irritation / pain , I hit the pool.... relief ! I swim breast stroke mostly and alternate front and back . It worked very well . No more aching !
Another ,
I had broken a collar bone in the early eighties and was told "it just heals " so I didn't really do much PT at all . I'm a heavy duty Mechanic and found I could not work long with my arm above my head ( collar bone injury side ) it would prickle and burn at the shoulder area and up the arm . I had another wreck a couple of years ago and broke that same collar bone again ! This time I was swimming for therapy . I can use that arm over my head again without problems , wow I was very happy with that ! A benefit of the swimming let it heal differently and with better range I guess .
Anyway thought I'd share a pill free , operation free way to help . All injuries are different for sure but for me this sure helped .

I am gaining strength and shoulder pain is significanly decreased. I am used rubber band resistance training 3-4 times per week for 30-40 min. Seems to be doing the trick and hope to be ready early spring.
Phil, sorry to hear. keep it moving!! When the arthritis gets bad head back to Australia for some warm humid air. Seems to really help in my experience. Id like to just move there |
