I am kind of shocked at how much outcry the train shipments of coal are creating in Puget Sound Country. All up and down the towns and cities... Seattle, Tacoma, Everett, Bellingham, more and more groups are saying NIMBY! Maybe the Gorge coal trains will disappear some day?

I wonder if any of the people complaining are the same ones who use electricity?

I don't do facebook. Besides, coal run through the gorge or Puget Sound to terminals for shipping to China brings us no electricity. Just congestion, pollution, green house gases, and coal dust.

Wylieflyote - there is definitely a NIMBY argument. There is also an environmental argument. I would like to plagiarize Nak from a previous post about coal going to China:

China needs cheap energy to fund a dictator who threatens destruction of the Gorge with Nuclear weapons. Along with other American cities as well. Anyone who doesn't realize that North Korea is funded and supported by China, and that N. Korea's threats of Nuclear strikes against the USA serves China's foriegn policy is living with their head in the sand. China needs cheap energy to fund Chinese Military cyber attacks against our economy and infrastructure. Has everyone already forgotten these continuing attacks???? China needs cheap energy to make good on their stated goal of pre-emptively sinking a US Carrier Task Force so that they can reclaim Taiwan. China uses coal to drive an economy that will drive their military to directly threaten us.

China's use of coal is completely devoid of any environmental protection. Anyone that believes China's official reports of CO2 and pollution production is living La-La land. I've flown over China numerous times and seen the clouds of thick air pollution that are larger than the state of California. Pollution that makes the worst day anywhere in the rest of the world look like a breath of fresh air. I've been there, I've seen it. That pollution does not stay in China. We all eventually pay for it. Our industry is forced to spend ever more on pollution control while atmospheric pollution levels continue to rise due to China's trashing of the environment. We give China cheap energy so that they can unfairly compete with our own industry which must obey clean air laws.

I am in complete favor of trade with China. It is our one hope of transforming China into a country which need not be our mortal enemy. But selling cheap energy to China is stupid beyond belief, whether you are a liberal or a conservative. We are endangering OUR environment to help China compete unfairly and damage our economy. We are endangering our environment and our economy to help China fund grave security threats to our country and our allies, hell, the world.

Other than a very few people getting richer, there is absolutely no reason to sell cheap energy to China, and every reason not too. Be it our environment, our economy or our security, there are a multitude of reasons to stop these shipments. Be you a liberal environmentalist, a conservative economic thinker, or just an American concerned about our security, you have every reason to oppose these shipments. What possible reason is there to support these shipments? None. Every argument presented here and elsewhere completely ignores the reality of what China does now, and what their goals are.

Also wondering if there are any studies on what the coal is doing to the environment - if there are some out there - could someone post a link. It would be good to see how the coal and train companies were able to pass environmental regulations. I'm not one to jump up and down and yell the sky is falling. Nor am I one to sit dumbly by and just expect the government to protect my ass.

Information is power.

What information is out there on shipping this stuff?

In case it doesn't show up, this video links to a short explanation of Thorium fueled lifetime reactors.

I am no physicist or chemist but it sounds legit to me. I'll drink that cool-aide

Hmmmm...what's China doing with all this coal? Allow me to research the topic on my smartphone (made in China) and blog about it on my computer (all component parts made in China). Well, that was depressing...I'm going to take my kite (made in China) out for a session and reflect a bit.

I just think it's ironic that one of the biggest challenges in the gorge is air quality and acid rain from the coal-fired plant in Boardman, yet all of the coal-related threads I read on nwkite are about dust from trains shipping it to the country that manufactures most of our kites.

Not that I'm a big fan of coal dust from trains, mind you, just taking the rose-colored glasses off for a sec.
