Mon Sep 02, 13 1:00 am Great Lakes Area Kiting Spots Help! |
|
|
I haven't posted much on this forum, but I figured I could share my work here and ask for some help from the crew out West as well (just to make sure I reach a greater audience). I've assumed the task of crowdsourcing a map for the Great Lakes region (chicagokitesurfing.com) of ALL kiteboarding spots. This includes snowkiting and landkiting too! I appreciate any and all spots you know of and care to share.
Also, new kiters, this is a list of locations with some info, but each spot has its own intricate set of complications. Please do not show up with a kite and get you or anyone else hurt or we will lose kiting privileges. Bring a local buddy who's knowledgeable and be safe, not stupid.
Great Lakes Area Map
My legend is as follows:
Green: Suitable for beginners.
Yellow: For kiters who can ride upwind with moderate board skills.
Orange: Avoid these locations if possible. Kiters must be advanced. IKO3/PASA2 level skills recommended.
Red: Limited access sites. Potential for danger. Not recommended or require IKO3/PASA2 certification.
Brown: Open grassy areas suitable for landkiting and snowkiting in the winter.
Blue: Open area frozen lakes suitable for snowkiting.
I'm putting a lot of work into this and it is 100% free for the community. Google's maps engine is still in Beta testing, but it "should" have more features when the final product comes out. I'm scouring the internet, but always appreciate any spots you can send my way. Please include: Address, Launch difficulty, Parking and fees, General notes.

You missed a few decent ones inbetween Cleveland and Buffalo. Presque Isle SP @ Erie, PA. Gratiot Beach Park @ Dunkirk, Bennett beach @ Angola, Woodlawn beach @ Woodlawn, and Hamburg Park @ Hamburg (not for newbs ). Skill level depends on conditions - Never snow kited any of these - not advisable, IMO. You might be able to find more info online about these spots ..

Great spots on the Canadian side as well, but then you have to put up w/ Canadians .. |

One of the most fun times I've ever had was kiting (doing a down winder) from Frankfort Michigan to Point Betsie. However that was in the summer time. When the fan is on Frankfort is one of my most favorite spots. |

The downwinders on the Michigan side of the big lake can be so magical! I've never made it up that far north but I hear Point Betsie and can be insane. Its on my list... can't wait _________________ Sean Sauve |

In regards to Lake St. Clair, I need some spot specifics before I can add them to the map. I'm aware that those spots exist, but I need to know about the launch and stuff in the water (rocks, etc...) before I put it up officially. |

have you referenced any windsurfing books during your research. Thats what we did years back when looking for areas when we were learning and polking around.
cheap and easy from used book stores ect. |
