Mon Aug 19, 13 11:17 am Knee sleeve/brace suggestions? |
|
|
Anybody using any knee sleeves or braces? I really don't want one of the metal heavy duty braces. Looking for more of a sleeve to keep things compact. Been waking up with sore knee and looking for suggestions if anybody has any that they like. I know of the normal sleeve that they sell at walgreens but after 2 sessions it smells terrible.

So, are you a newbie and doing a lot of walking back upwind on the beach? I remember back in the day when I was learning my knee was bugging me as well. It was the walking back up wind at an angle to counter weight the kite which was low angled (2:45 opposite of me). A very unnatural stance and wear against the body.
As for the smell of your knee neoprene brace, got to wash that thAng every time after use. And or purchase another and always keep one soaking in soapy water with a little bleach. Who cares if the colors get f-ed up. Otherwise just deal with it.

No not a newbie. I have always had a bad right knee and lately its really been bothering me. I have kited at least twice as much as I have in summers past so I think it is just getting over used. Thanks for the input though!

I can't help you with the brace question however. Washing what you have in vinegar might help with the smell.

Along with some glucosamine and vitamin I(beprofin).
Get some old wetsuits and cut the knee's out. You can also go to most medical supply places and get knee braces.
If you can get in to see a doc you should do it. It might be something you can fix with physical therapy.
Cheers,

Get it checked by a doc. It may be something that can be fixed; it may be something that left alone may get really bad. Probably not, but no way to know till you get it checked.

I've been suffering through a strained calf muscle that shows itself with pain centered around the attachment points on the knee. I picked a couple different knee support braces at Rite Aid. The medium support (covers the knee and has some stability support) and the tendonitis band. I don't ride with the support because that stuff gets stinkyif it doesn't dry out fast enough andas all watersport peeps know, once it gets stinky it never gets unstinky (sink-the-stink helps)
Here's what I do:
1) lay off the strappless surfboard and ride my twin tip more. less calf muscle being tweaked.
2) wear support on dry land when I feel pain.
3) ice pack (this helps the most)
4) liquid pain killer (this doesn't really help, but a good IPA will help you forget that you have pain)

I have been using these soft grey knit Don Joy braces under my wetsuit all summer and I'm really happy with them. I can't find a link to them online anywhere though so I'm not sure where you'd get them. I'll post a pic of it later.

Here are the pics.
I also use these braces for other activities such as running and tennis, basically they fully replaced my old neoprene ones and since they are under the wetsuit they don't fall down or wear out.

I've tried quite a few and what has worked best for me are the Breg Shortrunner braces. They last and provide a lot of support. Kind of pricey, but you can sometimes find them on ebay
