Mon Jul 01, 13 9:42 pm Wetsuit thickness for the Gorge now? |
|
|
Hi from Sunny Seattle!
What is the recommended thickness right now for HR & Jones? I'm hoping 3mm full...but doubting it's 2mm shortie temp yet.
TIA for advice! |

Wore my shorty Sat & Sun. Water temps are mid 60s right now. If you're doing a long session into the evening at Jones (til the sun goes down) the full is still nice. |

I was in my shorty tonight at Jones till about 8:30 and was fine. However I am on the stock side and come equipped with a bit of natural insulation. |

Yesterday I wore a 2mil pair of neoprene shorts and a 2mil short sleeve shirt. I had to keep dunking myself to stay cool. Laying in the water I was not cold at all, very comfortable. |

I wore a 3mm 'storm' shorty (covers knees) yesterday and dunked myself on a few occasions to cool off. 2mm shorty would be fine. I personally wouldn't go boardshorts just yet in case of a long swim, but I saw a few out yesterday. |

at jones on sun i was good in boardies and a 1mil top. I wasn't swimming much, but was fine on the couple of crash/relaunch/find board repetitions.
HR has the hood river dumping purdy cold water in, so it may be different. I usually bring everything, watch what all the other people are doing, make my call on the beach. Some people dont need much rubber while others get strapped with all of it. |

So rode hr from event site, which has some really obvious spill out of glacier water from the hood river right now that surrounds the sandbar, in boardies and a 1mil top and i was plenty warm. Had to body drag plenty and never thought I was cold. Plenty of riders out in anything from full rubber to shirtless. Don't think it's hypothermia cold right now, you obviously have to evaluate your comfort/peace of mind level. Hope this helps ya Last edited by OG on Wed Jul 03, 13 4:08 am; edited 1 time in total |

I'm ~160 lbs, a full body 4/3mm is a tad on the warm side if I'm up riding all the time, but comfortable if I'm in the water a lot. |

You have to ask yourself, how long and how far can you swim in 64° (today) or less water with, against or across the current? More neoprene is safer. More skin is suicidal. Have fun and make it back to shore for the next sesh.
