I was watching a little clip about Airstyle and Toby's DVD on Kiteforum showcasing the technique. I notice that he has a small loop fixed to the bar near the center lines and it looks like he uses it to hook it to a catch when he sheets the bar all the way in so that he can let go of the bar and the bar stays sheeted. Is this something common on this type of bar? Is it something he added to the bar? Is he just pulling the stopper down as he sheet in - and I am missing it? Here is the video clip............

Man, 30 seconds in I went into dangler overload and started shakin and pukin...

Yeah thats a North only thing, don't think they do it anymore, mini hook something or other.

Not sure why I chimed in since my North knowledge is so limited, just remember people accidently hookin in to that thing and getting worked.

The resulting crashes of fully powered kites contributed to my work load! Very Happy

Thanks for the info guys! Thinking about the setup - sounds pretty risky to have something that could potentially catch and power the kite up. Is that the only way to do a "hands free" airstyle trick - or do some people pull the stopper down as they sheet in and push the stopper back up with the bar when they sheet out? Or would that be too slow? Are airstyle tricks just for old guys like me and wakestyle for young punks? Should I just mow the lawn to be safe? Wink

I have this DVD. He goes into his setup on one of the chapters. He uses a very large (18m?) kite for everything. And yes, the discontinued north bar. I was pretty disappointed to learn about this.
Being locked in a fully powered waay oversized kite is too much of a risk imho.

Also, the DVD is pal format only. So I can only play it in my computer Sad

Just ordered my "Strictly Toby" t-shirt. Very Happy

Toby is a big guy and he rides mostly in clean coastal wind it seems so an 18m would be uber floaty. For the Gorge, a tad more risky, but his videos are hilarious because it goes against the norm of what is currently cool.......which makes it entertaining because he's so into it, and per him, "the people ask for it."

His flying seagull into the sunset at 2:05 is just classic and I'd give a keg of choice to see somebody pull one of those off around the KB4C first turn buoy this year.

As long as it's fun to you, who's to say pulling in your stopper ball in and sending the shit out of it with no hands isn't a good time? Smile

hmm, foggy memory, but didn't the really old 4 line kites come with a big u-shaped loop thing on the bar, so you could hook in full power permanently? like they took a two line kite bar, and added a chicken loop. junk, cause it hung up inadvertently 100 times in 5 minutes

sorta like this turd...

Yes, that particular set up is SUPER dangerous!!! I saw someone get killed using that set up. There were a lot of other factors but that hard line loop is what kept him from bailing.

That said, I used to use the micro hook back in the day and I loved it, until it broke. I think the safest way to do the "Hangman", is with the stopper ball pulled in. You just don't have much of a chance to sheet out while twisted up in the air. I don't have a stopper on my bar and I really kinda miss it sometimes. Mostly cuz my arms get tired from working the kite to pull my fat ass out of the water.

Ask one of the La Ventana regulars about the North Microloop. Worst idea ever. This LV kiter was on the beach (gusty) and while sheeting in he accidentally hooked the microloop. A few seconds and later he is crippled for life. Back when I owned this product, I would cut that loop off as soon as I openned to box.

The North micro loop is not dangerous, but the advent of the stopper ball to the new bar system is an improvement. The whole purpose of the microloop is to power the kite up to its max in light wind conditions and reducing forearms stress. Don't talk trash about what you don't know. I rode with it for years and was always bummed when it broke during a lighwind sesh and I needed to replace it. Just like with any system, you need to figure out how it works to stay safe. All the "horror" stories above are classic inexperience, and all kites and bars have their own kitemares, just not everybody has the same experience.
