PostSun May 19, 13 9:43 pm    Jones Beach Closure Meeting, who is coming? Reply with quote

Wed May 22nd at 5pm is our chance to meet with the home owners and people who are pushing for the jones beach rules and closures. we need to show in a positive way that the kiting community is a positive force at Jones. We need to make a positive influence on these people who are rightfully fustrated with the problems of jones. We have the opportunity to help with their concerns and fustrations, we can contribute positively. One thing for sure is change is coming and we need to do all we can to make this the best we can for us kiters and other beach users. Jones is irreplaceable location and is a jewel in the NW, it can not be replaced. Jones the major location for beginners and the advanced. Alot of us locals and Portland crew ride at Jones.

Lets get a roll call going for who is coming to the meeting and lets meet before hand to discuss topics to cover and how we will cover them.

what are the local home owners proposing? to shut it down altogether or limit access? I guess both options would be terrible

Meeting is at Clatskanie PUD in big new fancy complex on left hand side of rode going west. Just after Fultano's Pizza.
495 e columbia river hwy, clatskanie Or

I want to thank all who are coming. If you want, can meet me at Fultano's Pizza at 4pm to discuss and plan. Then be at conference room at 4:45

I am talking with the state again tommorrow to discuss how best to make our input most effective.

Anthony again thanks for all your help and the email, will make very good use of it and taking your advice seriously.

I plan of focusing on 2 major topics, vehicle access and land access. WED is a great chance to show the land owners we are a positive force on the beach and their land.

Kochese, Anthony, All,
I just wanted to in-advance Thank All of you for any effort put forth on this problem. Many of us up here in Tacoma, Olympia, South Puget Sound rely on Jones for our one-day quick Gorge-like windy destination but are stuck here with obligations.
For 22 years one of the most enjoyable trips has been the "1-2-3 Punch". Leave work Friday early for Jones, wind, Be at Da Hatch Saturday morning, wind, Finish out the weekend out East at Dougs or beyond. Bliss.
I'm stuck with grand-children or I'd make the 2 hour sprint from Tacoma to this meeting. Just know that for every face that shows there's at least 10 more supporting you.

Looks like I will not be able to make it either. I am on Dad detail. I second what Wylie said except for the Tacoma part. Portland crew is in. Let me know if there is anything I can do remotely. Call, email, or whatever.

I support a ban on ATV's and any driving on the sand except to launch a watercraft at Jones. As a former ATV owner Jones is simply to small of an area for ATV,s.

As a landowner I support any land owner that does not want strangers parking on their property. Park in the parking lot provided, please.

While parking on the beach at Jones may be convenient, in excess it adds unnecessary risk to kiters trying to launch and land kites. I have witnessed people drag their kites and themselves into parked cars on the beach. It would be safer for everyone if we all simply parked on the paved area provided. If you would like to drive out to the shore to dump your gear, that would be fine with me, but go park in the parking lot and stop disrespecting local landowners.

I support a 10 PM curfew unless they are going to staff some sort of authority to manage drunken assholes that want to party all night. I live near several campgrounds and sympathize with folks that have to deal with careless drunk people.

I am a kiter and Jones is my favorite spot to kite, so far, and I support these changes.

Anthony.

I'm on board with Mike... while I like Nate and am glad he is involved with the issues at Jones Beach, I do feel that from talking with him and reading through his posts that his concerns differ from mine and probably other kiters who also use Jones.

I think its important that Anthony/Nate realize that there are other kiters out there who use Jones regularly, and yet may have a bit of a different view point on some of these issues. These people should feel welcome to add their comments to the discussion without needing to "organize with Nate"... the meeting is open to the general public and you can also submit an e-mail if you can't attend. Please, if you attend the meeting, be open and honest about who you represent and are speaking on behalf of... ie, the CKGA, Air Pirates, etc... its not going to help things to try and come off as if we are speaking on behalf of all kiters, when we're not.

Changes I support at Jones:

-ban on ATV's
-if land owners are requesting it, staying off private property
-10pm park closure. This is totally reasonable, and from what I understand, there is currently a significant problem with all night parties going on at Jones.
-no vehicles on the sand/parking in designated areas only. I'd like to see an allowance for rescue launches, but other than that, keep the beach clear.

I think for most Jones users, parking in the parking lot then walking gear to the shoreline is going to be no problem. Almost all other launch spots work this way, and many include much further walks to access the water. Its a small inconvenience so that others may enjoy the area to its full potential.

i suggest the kiters avoid asking for additional restrictions that are not already being proposed by landowners... careful what you wish for.

also. kiters will be better served and more persuasive if you have the appearance of being more or less unified.

just my suggestion. do what you will.
