I was in Maui last week and blew a double back roll about 40 yards off Naish Beach just before dark. My board was about 50 feet away and I was body dragging back to it when I lost sight of it. I want to shore and looked everywhere for it to no avail. Finally it got dark and I had to get on my plane back.

The next day a guy with a HI number called me. I asked him if he found my board. He said he did. Anyway, I told him thanks for calling and that I would figure out an easy way to get the board from him and give him a reward even though I already left the island. He said he was going out for a session and to text him later.

I figured out a way that he could drop it at a local shop and have them give him a gift certificate. I texted him to ask for his name for the gift card and to give him instructions. No response for over a day. I then left him a voicemail to the same effect. It's been two more days. I got a weird vibe from him on the phone. Seemed to change his tune once he knew I was off the island. I think he thought I was someone else, too.

Anyway, I'm starting to wonder if I'll ever see that board again. It's a 2012 North Jaime. What should I do? Call the cops with his phone #? How long do I wait. Very frustrating and definitely bad board karma.

Legally he is stealing, since he is aware of the owner. If you are to write off the board, he refuses to do nothing then I would report him to the county sheriff’s office and let him know your actions. You could also make him aware that he is acting against the law and hope

I texted him again and no response. Guess it is time to call the sheriff. What a drag.

I called the Maui Police. They said they'll give him a call. There isn't much they can do if he doesn't answer the phone or admit it.

Is there a kite forum in Maui? The guy sounds like a kiting regular at Naish beach. I would like to alert folks to keep their eyes out for my board.

And yes... I picked up a new board (North Team Series) and absolutely love it. Hopefully I'll get my Jaime back and he can repair his karma deficit.

Any chance you can post a quality pic of your board with any identifying marks etc. I will be there in a month for 10 days or so and I am sure the quard will be down by then and karma can smack the thief right upside the head. the gene pool needs to be cleansed of thiefs.!!!

That would be awesome. I can do even better than that... I have the serial number: 136 121001894. If you're on the beach and can't remember the serial number, you'll see that a couple of the fin screws have been replaced with round heads versus the regular counter sunk versions. The guy sounds like he's got a foreign origin and has a pretty heavy accent. He has a hawaii phone number, so I'm assuming he lives there. Here's what it looks like:

Cops are probably friends or "cousins" of the guy. You are just mainland scum. I wouldn't get your hopes up. Maui is my favorite place to Vacation. I may even live there someday. Some of the attitudes along the beaches are pretty sad. Most of the people are really friendly - a few bad apples sour the vibe............
