Looking for a freeride board with good pop for high boosting, good carving ability in river swell and small waves and smooth in chop. Do they make such a thing? If so, which board and size? I'm 6'1" and 190 naked
Thanks |

140cm Ocean Rodeo Mako
Pop might not be the best in the world, but man is it smooth and they carve extremely well. |

Mako's are great, but the problem is you need a surfboard. Strap up a 5-8 ish surfboard and your set. Can you ride back side? If yes proceed to strapped nirvana
happy kiting,

Perhaps I should have been more specific. I ride a 5'6" strapped Slingshot Pit exclusively but am looking for a twin tip, with similar attributes, that pops and can carve river swell and small waves smoothly.
I have owned or demoed:
2013 Flysurfer Flywave - Not enough pop
2011 OR Mako - Not enough pop
2008 North Jaime 132 - Too small (I am 6'1", 195)
The posts are steering me towards the Shin Monk, North XRide or North Jaime.
Thoughts on board and size? |

I'm 6' and 195lbs and Ride a Jaime 136 and love it. I've ridden the latest model Jaime for the last three years and found the 2011 and 2012 models to be way better than the previous ones. The 2012 has more adjustment in to footstraps, but otherwise is very similar to the 2011. I haven't tried the 2013, yet, but hear it is a little more freestyle oriented with the edges squared off a little bit. The X-Ride is nice, too, but I definitely prefer the Jaime. The X-Ride's fins are just a little too grippy for my taste and the pop isn't as nice. My 2012 will be for sale soon if you want to demo it. PM me if interested. |

Kenja, how would you say the Jaime surfs swell in comparison to the XRide? Also, yes, I will demo your board. PM me when you plan to have it down by the water. |

I keep hearing a lot of good things about the Shinn Monk. My only concern is that the Jaime 132 was WAY too small for me and I am afraid that the Monk, which only comes 135, even though you can go 42cm or 44cm wide, will still be too small and if I get too wide, I will lose performance. I am not looking for a light wind board so not sure if the Monk at 135X42 or 135X44 would work well. |

The mako does carve great but if you think it pops well, then you should try a board that actually does pop and they will blow your mind!
The Jamie is a great board that lots of people love. Pop master.
Still my favorite board after many years on the water...crazy fly raptor. Carbon fiber goodness!
The waimen boards are also super poppy.
To get allot of pop, the board needs to hold and edge really well and have ends that are squarish enough that there is enough surface area to push off the water with.
The opposite of really small tailed boards.
So squarish for explosive pop. Rounded for smooth carving.
The only board that carved better than the mako is the jimmy Lewis. Too fragile though.

The jimmy lewis boards are very smooth. The old liquid force boards that had the rounded edges were smooth too.
The thinner boards with square tips have way more poop.
Good to see you again Brian,
Cheers,
mako's are really good boards but they are not poopers. _________________ Hey, I'm being hahahahahrassed! |

Crazyfly Raptor 137x43, good balance between pop and carving/chop damping ability with a slight lean to the pop side. Have ridden smaller Bulldozer model which had loads of pop, but didn't carve as well. I use the Raptor here in Idaho on 12m to 7m days (used yesterday on 7m) and have used in the Gorge on a similar range of days...board did OK carving swell by WS bridge.
Cheers! |
