Dear all the kiters.

I am a mom who have 4kids and husband who loves kite. I don't kite but I know way more than you think.

This is my first time I write here because I need all the kiters attention!!!!!

We were at roads end beach saturday march 30th beautiful afternoon to enjoy. Just sit relax and feel the sun and listen kids laugh, watching their play and sounds of waves.

All the sudden huge 17m black/white sling shot / with Doyle blue board came out from nowhere. Even he did not to care much about the edge of his kite are going to hit any of us.

Yes he kite nicely. Good to see kiter's high jump. Thank you for sharing.

However I really didn't appreciate how he closehe came to shore/just above the people who were just enjoying the beach. It wasn't only once. It was many times especially when he started to kite alone for first 20 min.

After 20 min He took down his kite to the beach where there was an empty spot but many people were there including so many young kids who have no idea about 17m kite are so powerful and kite line will harm anybody.

When huge 17m came down from sky, young boy was very close enough to watch and walking around the kite.

I do know he was watching carefully around kite. However never know Mother Nature.
If all the sudden gust came, he would harm anybody including that young boy. Right?

Any sports need to have best way to manage And try not to take high risk.

He sure gave us enough risk constantly. he sure knows how to kite well in the ocean but no manner to enjoy in the public place line today.

I want to say out loud!!!!!!

YOU DID WRONG PLACE!!!
You could have done Way further out where not many people are around.

Why you save your time to walk to chose the dropping spot near the exit.

I would appreciate all of you have better manners to enjoy your luxury hobby if any of you really want to keep Oregon coast for your play ground.

Beautiful sunny day at beach are not only for your play ground. Especially when the day were like today. You see so many people are there to enjoy differently.

I Would like to suggest all the kiters To learn how to share beach. If your kids/family are there to sit or lay down to enjoy sun.
Are you sure you drop kite right next them if there are spot to drop the kite?
Are you sure not to worry your/anyone kids?

I honestly not happy to see how Mr. Sling shot 17m kite man did this afternoon, at all as Mother of 4kids who know the danger part of 17m kite.

Mr. 17 m was lucky. 99.9% of the people except me and my kids at the beach have no clue about how dangerous thing he did around us so closely.

I am more than happy to hear anybody opinion. I am hoping to hear positive feedback and all of you know how to share and enjoy the beach together when non kiters are around No matter beach or river.

It's YOUR responsibility to protect our safety When you kite in public where everywhere are public. Please remember.

As you know. There is no law. No rule. But if all of you do right things. New kiters follow.
It's simple concept.

I truly enjoy watching kiters all year around including my husband.
I really want to see kiters best polite attitude to show the respect non kiters no matter where I go with my husband.

Thank you for reading. Please share your opinion and make Oregon beach/river for safest and joyful place to kiters and non kiters. It's coming from you.

Ignorance is bliss i guess. The rider must have thought the beach to be his and you yours.

I am sorry you felt unsafe by this rider I am sure that I have been guilty of dropping my kite close to tourists who set up camp by my stuff on the beach.

Thanks for the reality check.....we all need it from time to time .

In kiter defense the wind must have been mild if they were willing to be seen getting dirty with such a big date(17m). So he may have felt the situation was not too extreme.

Damn. Get over yourself. If you know so much about kiting and are worried then get your brats outta the way of people kiting.

If the kiter is downwind of people there's no danger.

I picture you as some Asian woman with attitude.

Just sayin.

Wo
I completely agree, you’re dead on with the concern. I was in South Padre this last week and seen some similar issues. Please, Please, do not, do not just stand there and not say anything to the rider. Please always express your concerns and remind people about any and all kite dangers. Sometime we just need to be reminded, even myself !!

But as you can guess please provide a reminder in a friendly manner, not a MOM reminder if you understand. Very Happy But in a way a good friend would remind another. Very Happy

Thank you for the post !!!

Very Happy Very Happy

If you were upwind of the kite there is zero risk of injury or mishap. If you were downwind of the kite, then there is a range of risk depending on the competency of the kite handler.

I personally try to always protect the tourists by coming in below them or way upwind of where they are frolicking. Most of the time they are completely oblivious to the kite and unaware of any risk. But it is best to keep them happy and entertained as a complaint to a State Parks and Beaches official could put the whole kitesurfing scene in jeopardy of closure which would be devastating at certain locales.

Bottom line to all the kiters out there: Be mindful of the safety of the beach tourist!

Wind ski, who asked you?

I'm just sayin if you see a kilter and you're so worried either get outta the way or go help them. Don't be a bitch and sit back with a video camera hoping to film a kitemare you can then show as a reason to ban kites. Rolling Eyes

Yep, I sailed Fanzo/Manzo yesterday. Warm temps with H20 and air, green water, small waves, crowded beaches. 10 kites out yesterday and 1 poleboarder. Sailed 13m and surfboard. Coast was a zoo yesterday with the Perfect storm so to speak: great weather and Spring Break. Short sands parking lot extended onto the Hwy. Good luck getting your own wave there.

When rigging I found myself reminding myself to look out for tourist when launching and riding close to shore and to be patient with other users ie older people walkiing their little dogs etc. Yesterday reminded me of rigging and launching at Tolovana with crowds and questions.
If I had yesterday all over to do again, I would have purchased more ice for my cooler to keep my appre kite beers truck driver cold and to have rigged my lines away from the hard sand/high water mark. I found that on a crowded beach, this is the path of least resistence and where most travel on the beach. I would have saved myself lots of time if I had setup in the soft sand, farther away from the water and hard sand and beach wanders.

Doyle board, huh? Discerning eye. . .Hi BC. Did you get close enough to read that label? If so you should of took a pic of the tool in action, post it and someone eventually would have talked to him. Perhaps you should have talked with him. . . ?

Thx 4xmom for your post.

Good grief. Stop taking this thread to racist remarks and hate. Grow up.

To address the lady/mother & children...There is some merit to saying that if you know so much about kiting and the area..why are you not using the family park that was made for you & spent for you? There are signs posted everywhere about the event site. The event site is the event site because of wind activities, which is a part of the economy. Look around. Surf shops, coffee, brew pubs etc.

BUT: There are a few kiters whos skills are so second nature that in their confidence I think they do forget that other people can be intimidated by kites & wind surf sails & boards . Kids are attracted to them and run up to them. It is the way it is and we as a wind community do need to consider what is going on around us on the beach.
A good rule of them is to stay up wind of any wind activities going on. Windsurf sails and boards have been known to fly down the beach as well. That is why there are cables stretched across the grassy lawn.

It is your responsibilty to be aware of your surroundings no matter if you are a pedestrian or a wind jockey. Such is life.

Respectfully,
a 45 year old female kiter
