Just was informed after MRI last week. Kind was expecting it after feeling pain and weakness much of August. I decided to ignore it until my season ended.
Now i have to deal with it. Anyone have experiences to share? _________________ https://www320.safesecureweb.com/kb4corg/athlete_detail.cfm?a=100 |

what is your age? do you know which muscle involved? I can look up some papers on standard of care/prognosis. I'm no expert on this, however.
If it makes you feel any better I am fairly certain i'm there with you. MRI on Wed, believe i have a labral tear/SLAP lesion. I will push for surgical repair if I am correct.
I'll cross my fingers for you.
My experience with my left shoulder has taught me that non-surgical prognosis of shoulder trauma to rotator cuff/labrum(especially) is poor/not nearly as effective as surgery for very active and younger individuals. If your orthopedist suggests that surgery is a viable option - I would say it is wise to go for it. |

I have had slap/bankhart tears of the labrum in both shoulders along with decompression surgery also. Had the surgeries 3 and 4 years ago and all has been well. Both shoulders are great and work for kiting and paddling without issue. Let me know if I can offer you any assistance . Take care Blake |

A year ago I had an MRI diagnosis of 30 percent rotator cuff tear, in addition to a bicep tendon tear. My Dr. recommended no repair of the bicep and maybe surgery on the rotator, depending on my function. Scheduled a followup appointment.
Then I saw a PT for an exam of my shoulder function. He found I had good functioning and recommended some strengthening exercises. At my followup Dr. visit he did another exam and said my functioning would not improve much with surgery. So I did PT and no surgery.
I SUP surfed 2 months over the winter (prone paddling not good) and kited this summer. My shoulder is still okay but weakened (and sometimes painful) and now I think my other shoulder is going. My Dr. compared the rotator cuff to a leather jacket, with age and use it gets thin and cracked and then can tear. I fit both the aged and used categories.
Two friends have had both their shoulders repaired for rotator cuff tears. Both said emphatically, if you can avoid surgery do so. The recovery is long and uncomfortable/painful. |

Thanks for this thread - I've been dealing with a painful shoulder the last 6 months and it's not getting better. Local shoulder expert in Hood River first gave me a cortisone shot, which didn't do much, then I had an MRI, and they said no evidence of tears. But it hurts with little daily activities like putting on a shirt, bad enough that I don't even use that arm most of the time. I'll still do a full hard day of kiting and the next day is really sore.
Can anyone reccomend a good shoulder doc? I think I need a second opinion...
thanks |

Surgery for torn labrum 3/1/12, they put in four anchors, back on the water by mid July doing short 1/2 hour sessions. Was able to go two hours straight Saturday with just the normal soreness of being 41 with two kids and trying to do too much on the weekend.
Space out your PT sessions, they do run out. |

STOP!!!!!!
I had the same exact problem 4 yrs ago.
Do your self a favor and discover a Natural pathic alternative that really works.
Platelet rich Pro-Low Therapy. Call or goggle Noel Peterson (Lake Oswego) a local kiter that is on the cutting edge of this technique/therpy. I have had two major tears (rotator cuff and l forearm tendon) both treated with PRP and Bam! FIXED! better than new!
The treatment is not for little girls but it works.
Rebound is starting to use this on the Ballers. |

talked with the orthopedic doc at rebound today. he noted the right supraspinatus tendon has a partial tear but he said it is almost fully torn and hanging on by a thread. the labrum appears intact. the biceps looks a bit ragged but appears to be not a big deal.
i wish i could say this is my first structural problem but i appear to have significant connective tissue issues. in 2001 i tore both achilles tendons with surgical repairs. in 2006 i tore both hamstrings simultaneously. last year i ruptured my quad muscle with surgical repair.
i am 47 and plan on kiting strong for years to come. i hear rehab is the way to go for a partial tear. however with my history of tearing i am having trouble believing it is going to hold up through another season. my right arm takes a beating at work and it is my goofy-foot toe-side riding arm.
i will likely try PT initially but will plan to shoot for december to decide whether to go surgical.
thanks for all your input. see you on the water next summer. _________________ https://www320.safesecureweb.com/kb4corg/athlete_detail.cfm?a=100 |

I have had pain in my shoulder for a year or so. gotten worse so I finally had an MRI. If you had this without contrast media injected into your shoulder first it will be hard to make a good diagnosis of all tears/issues.
I have a full thickness tear of approx 1/2 of supraspinatus tendon. Several docs I have spoken with say surgery is best option. I don't want it to continue to tear and I'm not orthopod but pretty sure PT can't re-attach the torn section so I have opted for surgery. Here in Tri Cities Wa we have a couple of guys that specialize in shoulders. Planning to have mine done in December so I can be back on the water next year.
I am 40 and plan to kite for many years. I'm a novice and kiting sure didn't do this. I had a bike wreck years ago and landed ON my shoulder. Terrible pain for months. Started tennis about 4 years back. I think serving is what did it to me. Bummer because I love to play tennis. I hope I can get back on the court, but definitely getting back on the water.
Good luck to all you shoulder injured folks! |
