I've also seen a few days where astoria->kelso was good but astoria->portland was crap when it was temp/pressure differentials.
Portland can be affected by the nice hot easterlies which can drive up the temp/pressure gradients, and jones won't go unless there is enough between astoria and kelso. (been skunked twice this year by that).
I do agree though cloud cover doesn't necessarily make it not go, Bill and I have kited where everything was gray and had a blast. Dern, Bill, and my self also had fun once doing storm front kiteing in the rain there... now that was a blast... and enough time for a beer between 30 minute sessions.

OK, so here's my Jones report for today. I arrived at about 4:30, and it was pretty light. A few people were attempting to go out on 12m kites (give or take), and they were having a tough time of it.
By the time I had my kite rigged, (12m Bandit) and was all geared, the wind was picking up nicely. After a few minutes practicing body dragging, it seemed like it was picking up a bit more. So I grabbed my board. That was about 5.
For the most part I was fully powered for the next 3 hours. I spent some time over in Nuclear Alley, and the wind was quite a bit stronger and smoother there. By 7:45, I was definitely overpowered somewhat. When I left after 8, the wind was still going strong (though the light was fading - even with the full moon).
Awesome day - hopefully tomorrow will be similar or better. . .

There is something very satisfying about a mid-week evening sess.

Yeah, it was a good day! I was on my 10m... JJ on his 12m I think and we had a great time up in the ponds. That was a really nice sunset on the way home too!
