Prepare thy self....for winter swell cometh

“intermittent high-intensity bouts of all-out paddling intercalated with relatively short recovery periods” and “breath holding.”. Laughing

Wave riding time = 8% of session (pro version)

And for us amateurs, wave riding time is probably far less.

Hence, one more good reason to learn how to ride waves using a kite.

Interesting, but you have to take it for what it is. Like kiting, surfing is highly variable dependent on location, conditions & individual.

Surfing Rincon Point is obviously very different from the local beach break. Comp surfing is very different that surfing for fun - Competitions are often held is less than ideal conditions, but wave count is important.

As for actual wave riding being 8% - that's what i'd expect. It's kind of like doing tricks in the kiddie pool. The set up for the trick takes up 90% of riding time, the actual trick time is a small fraction of the whole.

I'm surprised the surfers hit 30mph - that's fast ..

Read the article you may get a work out surfing but you sure are not going to get one kiting, unless of course you get into trouble. Thats why so many of us give windsurfing up and take up kiting-we are getting too old for the former.

Best quote in the article "When the researchers parsed the surfers’ heart rates during the competitions, they found that pulses did not peak during paddling, no matter how hard the riders were scrabbling to grab a wave. Instead, their hearts beat most rapidly just as they finished riding each wave."

Never dropping below 120 bpm and 190 bpm peak so conclude that surfing is fun, at least when you're on the wave.
