Argument can be made regarding boots and knee injuries as well, maybe more due to wake-style riding but nonetheless...

Kiteboarding can be Dangerous. Dont do it, Please dont

What a bunch of nancies. Straps on a surfboard effing rock.

"Why you got straps on your board breh?"

"You gonna go strappless soon breh?"

"You can still jump, it's just a strapless air breh."

"I like not having straps because I can really surf the board and move around."

A 5'8" kiteboard surfboard is not a 10-foot Waikiki nose rider where you're gonna walk around and hang 10. If it isn't trimmed right, move your straps and tweak. Then, you can jump and slash like a badass.

I gotta admit, this is what I thought too when reading the OP. I don't like to hear about anyone getting hurt, and sure hope that perryj makes a speedy recovery... but the "please don't" for straps? Really?? Footstraps are used by the vast majority of kiteboarders without issue... just because you get hurt by a piece of equipment doesn't mean it was the equipment's fault. There's merits for using boots or going strapless, sure, but as a safety issue? no way...

Sure. Obviously, and boots have been known to be associated with knee injuries. I'm just exchanging info like we do on the forum. Me personally I'm done with straps.

When I was learning to ride a surfboard I decided to go strapless from the get go. It was easier then I thought. The jibe was the hardest but finally I got it. It is great to be able to place my feet in different positions and experiment with out straps restrictions. It's hard though to go really fast or jump high, unless you're Mito, with out straps. If I feel like a chill surf/swell sesh I go strapless. Boost/speed sesh=straps.

Seems to be many in the kiting community that are "board-curious"

I just need enough wind to do a downwinder barefoot waterski style. "Don't use boards. They are dangerous".

Boots are easy, they make sense and there is to much fun to be had strapless altogether to ride with straps. Peace.

..i thought the same thing until my forward roll downloop transition thing caught the tip of my board at pretty high speed. I faceplanted so hard I still have neck pains. Using straps in that case I would still have crashed, but the board would probably have some off.

Point is, you'd never get rid of the risk Smile

Any ways, good recovery. before you know it you'll be back up and riding

Kiteboarders with their "this gear set up is safe" are like alcoholics with their "don't drink" rules.

I figure I'll be ok if I ride strapless.

I'm not an alcoholic, I never drink before 5.

I'll be safe if I ditch this leash.

I'm not a drunk, I never drink alone.

Sorry about your injury.
The depth of your foot into the strap and the width of the strap affect your release in a twisting fall. Pads with deep heel pockets affect the release. Booties also affect the release.

Narrower boards allow you to get a solid toe side edge with looser straps because the edge is under your toes and your foot has better leverage. When I ride a wider board I tend to force my foot deeper in the strap to get a better bite on the toe side if I am jumping or riding toe side. The combination of forcing my foot deeper in the strap and narrow foot straps can create a problem if one foot comes out and also at the end of each session when I try to kick off the board and step onto shore.

One solution is narrower boards. Another solution is wider straps. The last option is not sticking your feet in so deep, but this compromises your toe side edging and is a tradeoff between safety and performance. Some boards just do not work well without jamming your feet in there. If you need to force your feet so deep that the board will not fall away anytime you relax your feet during a jump you should conceder changing boards or changing foot straps.

Good luck on your recovery.

pj, lose the heel straps!

You can't shed the board quickly, if a foot comes out and you feel like you can't land semi-strapless.

Get rid of the heelies. They spell DANGER!!!

Hey pj, get well soon and I hope to see you out on the water!

just so you guys know, its very possible to get injured on a strapless surfboard.
this past winter I was riding in the sound and hit a piece of chop that shattered my tibia and fibula. I now have 2 plates and 12 screws to prove it.
