So I have been kiting here in the Gorge for a while and really want to start heading to the coast, but have no idea which conditions I need to pay attention to for kiting there (Oregon coast, north of Newport).

At the moment, being able to identify 'user-friendly' conditions is the goal and am not necessarily looking to identify those unicorn days. I just want to ride, and not get swept out to sea.

I hear that off-shore breezes and rip-currents are less than desirable, but have no idea of how tides come in to play...

If anyone could advise on this it would be much appreciate!

Wow, you came to the right site. There is so much here on this topic. Recently a few good posts are listed below, however, searching on "oregon coast", "coast", etc. will produce a lot of good info.

Good luck, stay safe and for within an hour and 1/2 of Portland, Manzanita is generally your best bet for wind.

Your world is about to really open up. Go in the summer when the waves are smaller and the water temp less frigid- dress for the swim. Find a wide-open beach with a slope that is very gradual, such as Fort Stevens and Manzanita. Whiskey Run is also great beach down south. Always go with a buddy and only with some onshore component to the wind. And last, don't drop your kite. Have fun!

Try to avoid harassing the great white sharks ... your presence might throw them off the hunt and could even impact their breeding cycle. They breed super slow, and being top predators, they are very high-profile animals. Before you know it the crazy plover advocates would get involved and then it's all over.

You wouldn't want to be the person who started THAT chain of events!

Went to sunset beach just south of Fort Stevens last night for a 2.5 hour session, lit on my twelve. Remember a high rocker board or a surfboard is ideal. If it blows Saturday or Sunday PM me I'd be happy to show you the ropes.
