The Fourth of July holiday will limit access to Port of Hood River property beginning Tuesday, July 3. This will include a three-day closure at a popular recreation area, the Spit, used particularly for kiteboard launching.

Hood River Eyeopeners Lions Club will begin setting up its fireworks display just west of the mouth of the Hood River on Tuesday, July 3. Volunteers will be burying fireworks used for the annual July 4 display over the Columbia River.

As a result, the Port of Hood River will close the Spit area at 6:30 a.m. on Tuesday, July 3, and leave it closed until approximately noon Thursday, July 5. This site is designated as a kiteboarding launch area, but no access will be allowed while fireworks are present.

The evening of July 4, the Marina Park swim beach and rigging lawn closes at 5pm. People and vehicles will need to move south to the picnic shelter area and Marina Green for viewing the evening fireworks display. Once the Marina Park is full, “Closed” signs will be placed at the entrance into the Marina Park.

General public use of fireworks is prohibited on Port property, including the Marina and Waterfront areas. This policy is strictly enforced.

Those watching fireworks from the Marina and the Waterfront are reminded the show’s conclusion usually brings heavy traffic congestion. Patience and cooperation help to ease the pressure created by the large number of vehicles attempting to exit the area at the same time.

For more information, call the Port of Hood River at (541) 386-1645.

Just a quick clarification... you're talking about the spit, not the sandbar, is that correct? So if there is a sandbar showing, we are still allowed to launch from it, is that right?

Update: Called the Port this morning, pump & dry at the Event Site & walk/swim to sandbar & launch is not effected by the fireworks closure.
