Things continue to progress with Blackberry beach. After the joint CGKA/CGWA work party last weekend, the Port of CL paid for some machine work to smooth things out, make a better path to the water, move brush piles we made and scrape at the surface as much as possible to flatten things out. Needless to say, it’s a dramatic change from just a few weeks ago.
The images I've attached are from the site looking east.
Coming next, the project has as much gravel and coarse sand as is neededt, supplied by the Port of CL, and a fellow kiter has volunteered his time and tractor/backhoe to do whatever needs to be done. We also have grass seed available.
So, what will likely be done in the next few weeks is to get gravel then sand aid down on the path and lower area and grass seed planted on the flat area up top. It’s all pretty muddy right now, but with these improvements it will be good to go on EAST WIND days.
There also great potential for a west wind launch, but it will take quite a bit more work clearing the rest of the jetty to deal with the wind shadow.
Anyone interested in helping with the project can contact CGKA vice president Adam Lapierre at: alapierre@hoodrivernews.com.

A big pile of gravel is now there and needs to be moved onto cleared area. I'm going down tomorrow morning with tractor to move it. It might be nice to have a few people to help trim the path a little wider and trim roots that are still sticking up. Sorry for the short notice. Bring loppers, small chain saws and gloves if you can make it. I'll be there by 9 a.m. Thanks, Pete

My buddy Walt and I got the gravel spread on Saturday. It took 6 hours to shuttle the material, I'm guessing about 12 cu. yds., down the jetty. We need a narrow track trailer if we intend to put more material down there. Something no wider than 6' outside to outside wheel measurement. With that, about 6 guys and the tractor we could load it up drive it down and shovel it out. Something that would carry close to 1 cu. yd. would be ideal. A bigger bucket loader would also work but only if it isn't wider than 6'. Maybe a bobcat with a bigger bucket but still would take many trips. I did approx. 45.

East winds today - looks like there is enough room for a couple of kites at Blackberry beach now? Or still head to Stevie?

I had a long appointment cancel this afternoon - I may attach some razor blades to the lines of my kite and do a little more brush removal. That is the only kind of landscaping I would be interested in today................

I see no flaws in this plan.

We tried the site out yesterday and tore up my 10m on the sharp sticks that still need to be trimmed lower and covered with material. We did get out in a dying wind and learned a lot about the site. It's definitely not ready for prime time. Please don't drive down the jetty. The edge of the path is so narrow that we will erode it even further and not be able to get any equipment down. Adam showed up with the Cascade Lock port commissioners, great timing! They were very friendly and enthusiastic about getting the beach built properly. There is a lot of material available to us, it's just going to be a challenge to get it all shuttled in to the site. A narrow track trailer would be a big help, no more than 6' wide outside to outside tire measurement. My tractor bucket only holds a little over .25 cu. yds. Of material. We need at least 50 more yds. in to the site (200 trips). The more the better. Thank you Adam for all your time and work on this. With some hard work we could have a nice alternative east wind site and a future west wind too!
