HI.

I'm trying to figure out what way the wind was blowing on Thursday, May 3rd at 3 p.m. in N. Portland (specifically on Lombard & Albina--we're really close to the railroad tracks on Columbia Blvd.). I'm getting info here, but have no idea how to read this! http://nwwind.net/wind.php?region=8

My sweet dog, Millet, went missing that day. It was extremely windy. She has never left home before. At this point, I've been searching for her for 10 days. Recently, I found out that a female dog of relatively her size was hit by a train on 45th & Lombard the following morning. No one can confirm if it was my dog, Millet, or not because the dog's face was brutally smashed in and her back leg was nearly ripped of. This is heartbreaking. I've looked everywhere for her collar (she was wearing one with an ID tag when she went missing, but the dog that was found didn't have one). The difference in the information about the animal is stark.

I'm wondering which way the wind was blowing because I've heard that dogs run into the wind because, most likely, they're tracking a smell. I need any hints!

I hired a search and rescue team last week that had told me the wind was blowing East and that Millet had headed West along the tracks. I don't know what to believe anymore.

PLEASE HELP! How do I find out this information?

Melissa

Sorry to hear about your missing pup.

According to the Portland Airport sensor it was blowing hard (22 mph gusting 35) from South-West.

Sorry to hear about your dog. I was at the St. Johns Parade and also saw the flyers that were put out.
The wind direction at that time was Southwest and gusty (SSW 20g32).
You don"t seem like you know too much on wind so here is what that even means...
The SSW is where the wind comes from, not where its going. So the wind would feel like it blowing up from dwntwn to st johns. also keep in mind that it was changing rapidly (i looked at other hours that day). Wind speed was 20 knots (23mph).

My dog disappeared for 5 nights and 6 days when it was really cold. he's 15 and a big dog, so he's REALLY old. I would not have expected him to survive 5 nights. I was very happy to have him back. it was SE 112 and foster and he was found within a mile of where i live.

point of the story is that he lost his collar somehow. If you havent already, try visiting the shelters several times.

He was running around for 5nights/days until someone called it in and animal control picked him up. He was chipped so they called us right away. HOWEVER, i was planning on going to the multnomah shelter in Gresham the next day anyway (i had been there already). I would have found him had he not been chipped.

Good luck. She might still turn up after having had an exciting adventure. I wish my dog could have told me what he had been doing those five nights.
