Thu May 03, 12 6:53 pm Slingshot Board Question? |
|
|
Got the kites quiver down. Slingshot T3, 7, 9 and 11m. Thanks to Craigslist and Cleanline Surf.
I am looking at a Slingshot Ignition for a beginner board. To save $$$, I am looking at New 2010 version. Are there really differences from 2010, 2011 and 2012 versions? The pluses and minuses. Would I as a beginner even notice the difference between the boards? 200 pounds for an Ignition 150.
Thanks

Any bigger twintip will be fine, SS Ignition is a decent board for getting started. However, you ought to consider getting a 14m T3 for your quiver. 7m and 9m are small kites, and an 11m is medium sized at most. Maybe I am biased, but the light wind realm is probably the best wind range to be learning in along with one of the funnest. I would stay off the 7m kite until you have some skills developed with higher winds on the 9m. At 200 lbs you will be in 30 knots plus on the 7m, shit happens really fast and it is good to have the instincts ingrained in your brain so you are not wondering what to do when the game doesn't go according to plan. |

I have the ignition 150, am about 225lb depending on what I had for dinner, and am a beginner. The board works great for me. It's big enough that I just pop right up and it seems easy to handle. The bindings are very comfortable and easy to adjust. I don't have anything to compare it to, but it seems like a great board to me. I am very happy with it. I say go with it! You'll be happy |

Agreed! Until recently all I had was a SS Key HD 13m. With my weight (and yours) the wind range is from mid teens to mid twenties (with this kite, anyway). So far I've never needed a smaller kite. I do have a 10 now just in case but I'm sure glad I got the larger kite. Good luck and have fun! You'll have a blast. I find myself off in la la land constantly "gettin down with the moves" and as my daughter would say "I've got the moves like Elmo" Oh well, I'll have the moves like Jagger next year |

Before you get too bummed about your quiver, I only half agree with the above recommendations.
This applies to the gorge and not the coast, though.
If you will be kiting in the gorge, then I think an 11m for light wind is fine. I used to have Turbos and they have very good low end. I only weigh 160, but my 9m got me comfortably down to about 14 or 15 knot average wind speed. I think an 11m will be an excellent light wind kite for you.
Regarding the 7m, I agree, you will not be using it any time soon. But after a few years you will be glad you have it. Although, by then you may wish you had a newer model. |

Thank you for the advice. A bigger kite is in the works. I will be using the kites for Coast and Gorge. What are your thoughts on getting on a Slingshot 2010 Key HD 13m over a Slingshot T3 14m(new)? Is there enough difference to justify the 2m gap instead of the 3 m gap. I think I have found Slingshot T3 14(new), but $1000 seems a little steep.
Thank

A key 13hd will have u riding in 15 knots and should be found for less than 1000. I just got a 10 with bar for 725 new. I know nothing about t3s but i am happy with the keys. Theyre a solid kite at a great price with great reviews. |

I like the ignition 150 for its stability, but at 200lbs, I had a hard time going upwind because it is so wide, I had a hard time digging in the rail to really go the up-direction I want. I found that the ignition 138 was almost as stable and went upwind well. |
