Thought this 'snub nose' board Tom Curren rode in the Rincon Classic was interesting (not my pic). Other surfers (like Bruce Irons) have used kiteboards for tow in, but this is an actual paddle in surfboard. It's short (under 5'), with flat rocker and a shape not a lot unlike a kiteboard. Thought it was interesting, and interesting how the two sports are coming together more than ever before.

Wow, I'm not worthy. Gman, only logical next step for you is to tow in at Nelscott with a skim board. Your whole life you've been training for this.

How does this even work? Is he being towed in? There is no footage of him dropping so I'm guessing yes? Looks outrageous.

Really wanted to try that - till I caught a reef wave on the head - strangely less motivated now... that kid is a super mutant - looks like he paddles in on the head high ones

That kid in the vid has got crazy flexibility, kinda of mutant Gumby combined with a really strong surfing background. Cool to see some pioneering in the waveriding department. But, it was obvious watching the footage how he could not gain speed out of carving a turn which a good shortboard surfboard will do so well. Watch Mick Fanning in the Bells contest final for a perfect example of how speed can be generated through carving turns. The skim slows down while the finned surfboard accelerates.

LOL ... That guy has got some skills. Don't think I'll be giving up the old surfboard design quite yet tho, as I've become too accustomed to edge control & acceleration. Looks like a ton of fun in the right conditions. Anyone ever see guys skim into the Wedge at Newport ? - that's pretty crazy too.

Kiteboarding was Joe Bauguess' inspiration for the mini simmons. I think its great, surfboard design seems like its been stagnating (aside from the switch of materials after the clarke foam fiasco)

Yup - Surfboard innovation seems to be following the 'Shorter & Fatter' trend. Slater has been messing around w/ shorter designs as well.

Here is a pic of the board you mentioned - Interesting this 'shorter & fatter ' design was based on a board made over 50 years ago.
