|

Hey Everyone,
It's currently the 30 day period to provide comments to Department of State Lands, it actually began on April 4th. The DSL approves all in-water, over-water, and floating structures. After comments close, there will be a 30-day Internal Review process.
The 30-day period for public comment After the comment period is over, the Department of State Lands will begin a 60-day internal review process to arrive at their decision.
Let the DSL know you support the Hood River Park!
You can submit your comments to the DSL at:

My comment:
Quote: | The cable park project will bring an action sports activity to hundreds of young residents of Hood River, stabilize business during the spring, summer, and fall, will provide jobs for people who already live here, and will not completely block access to the basin. While there has been some opposition to this project, it comes from a small minority consisting of an older demographic.
The users of the cable park will not just be the usual crowd that shows up in the summer. the users will be the local families who can't afford a quiver of windsurf/kiteboard gear or a wake boarding boat. Local kids who want to do an action sport but are to young to venture into the river on their own will benefit from the controlled environment of the cable park which requires personal flotation devices and helmets. My daughter will get to enjoy wake boarding in a safe and controlled way. This is compared to something like swimming at the Marina beach where she could be swept away in the current. Hood River has very little adventurous recreation for kids, and this cable park would be a huge win for the community.
Business in Hood River is very weather dependent. A windless weekend will see little tourism compared to a windy weekend. Cable wake boarding is very similar to kite boarding and the cable bring the tourism in when there wouldn't be any otherwise. This will have a stabilizing effect on most aspects of the economy in Hood River, rather than it being the usually roller coaster ride.
The cable park is slated to provide many jobs to the area and residents who work in the service industry would benefit from more competition among employers and the potential to work for an employer full time and gain access to benefits such as health care.
The cable park will NOT completely block access to the boat basin. The cable park will use 9 acres of the basin, and have many, many times more users as other competing activities. There will still be 5 acres of water that is usable by the main competing activities, kayaking and stand up paddle (SUP) boarding. The main draw to this area for SUP boarding is that a person can drive their vehicle to the very edge of the water so they do not have to carry the heavy SUP board very far. There are several other areas where this is also possible such as the hook. The argument that the cable park would preclude access to the boat basin is simply a scare tactic being used to sway opinions and is untrue.
In conclusion, I support the Hood River Cable Park project so that my friends, family, co-workers, and fellow residents of Hood River, Portland, and the entire Northwest can enjoy an action sport that is unique, affordable, safe, and a benefit to the local economy. |

I mistakenly didn't click on any of the set comments. I should have included:
-The project will not adversely impact water resources or interfere with navigation, fishing and/or public recreation.
there's no way to include that now that i've submitted my supportive comment, is there?
sorry |

Could it be argued that in the long run the cable could help the water quality because less people will be using wakeboard boats on this section of the Columbia if the cable does go in?? _________________ I heart dangling |

they did mention that the riding would increase the aeration of the water which is supposed to be a good thing for water quality. I guess it gets rid of harmful anaerobes? I don't know how much of a stretch that was.
not sure about the impact on the wake boarding community. |

Ian, yes, go ahead and post those as your comments. You have a right to post comments that you believe in as a citizen.
Consumer, I'd just resubmit your comment, check the right box, and include a note that you're resubmitting. |
