Dude, I've been here for over 6 months now.
The Endubbers are here for sure. All around ya.
What we need is a couple of NWKite stickers. I'm sure you'd see us often that way.
And yes, Maui is friggin' amazing. I thought (and still think) that the NW was awesome. But Maui is a whole other category. I've never seen anything like it. Even coming home from work in the middle of the night can be a mind altering experience.

Mon Apr 02, 12 11:01 pm Wow , another truth about Maui |

So this is interesting . I had no idea .
Haole Eh ?!
JackZ
I stayed at the North Shore Hostel in Wailuku on Vineyard St . I left all my gear in the vehicle in the parking lot across the street for 31 days I stayed . I had a great time and no problems at all with anyone . I ate in different places some I thought "local " I was pleasant with everyone as they were with me .
I spent 90% of my time on kite beach and had no problems there either , vehicle theft wise or other .
I went one night to the " Triangle "for drinks and saw little fat, Hawaiian, local ,Moke, I guess whatever !< They had black on black with black hats and sunglasses , flashback ,I thought I was riding again and in a clubhouse with midget bikers , I had a good laugh to myself . I don't do that scene no more man and I got outta dodge . So yes if your looking for it or live there I guess you would feel it or see it more . I went to another bar and it was full of gay people so I didn't go in . I had money enough to buy my own drinks .lol .
No EWOK's for me either , too bad eh , ha ha !?
I had a great stay both times I went within a 6 month period . I think it's a great place and would go back again .
Just to visit OK Moke ?! If it helps I stayed off your Sacred volcano as I read it's a spiritual place for your elders and I respect that so would not tread there .

Quote: | Go drive down Mill street in Wailuku and ask a local for directions to the blow hole. After strangling you he will point to your wifes mouth and indicate that there--there is the blow hole! |
That is some funny shit! Wailuku seems pretty tough, but I grew up in a neighborhood with way more violent crime than that, and I was the only white kid there too. If you experienced any of this on Maui, you clearly looked like, or acted like, a tourist. Don't let this fool you, about the only thing you can get into shit for is hitting on someone's girlfriend at the bar when people have been drinking, or dropping in on someone's wave.

Yeah, I lived on Oahu for a while. Not Maui for sure, but depending on where you are a lot of the same attitudes.
Is there racism on Oahu? Absolutely. Is it violent? Rarely. (At least real violence against adults. Schools are another matter.) Basically, there are areas where you're not wanted. If you're strongly encouraged to leave, leave. There's not that many spots like that, and I understand the local's motivation. If they didn't protect a few spots where they can live for a moderate price, housing prices would soar and make all the locals homeless. So there are places to live where you'd best be local. There are beaches where you'd best be local. Plenty left over for everyone else. In three years of living there, never once did I feel physically in danger. Most of the time, I felt the Aloha. The trick is to respect the locals, which you should do anyway.
I ended up being invited to spots where only locals are welcome, and I was made to feel welcomed. Once you get in to "Island mode", Hawaii is a wonderful place. You don't get the vibe as a tourist, you have to live there. I'd go anywhere on Oahu and not feel in danger. I might be asked to leave some spots, but if I left I think that's as far as it would go. I can't think of another city in the US where that would be the case.
On the other hand, even on Oahu, I think as a Haole the police treat you much the same as a "Good Old Boy" probably treats blacks in some southern states. At least that was my experience, and I'm an ardent supporter of our Men In Blue. Not so much if you're driving a rental--tourist--but more so if you're driving a local car. It's not pleasant, and serves as a reminder why all racism is bad, period.
My guess is Maui is the same on a more crowded scale. There are spots I'm sure where Haoles are not welcome to live. But as I have friends that happily live on Maui, I'm pretty sure there are plenty of places to live for mainlander immigrants. If you just zero in on the best habitat for the dollar, you might find yourself in an unhappy spot. Gotta do your research and find where it's a good place to live. Just like here. Just be cool and slow down to Island time. Ignore the few racists, just as you do here. For most, Aloha is a state of mind. Key on that and you'll be happy. Get in peoples faces and you'll suffer the consequences.
I'd move back to Hawaii in an instant, but I wouldn't leave a nice car unattended at a North Shore beach!

Very cool! Look for Aloha and you'll find it. I think the poster on the link from the other forum would find trouble wherever he went. That's just my opinion...

I got the Bird 3 times while driving there last month. Funny how the Locals took to my Alaskan Native Wife. Helped me score some Pineapple!
