This is not going to be a popular viewpoint, and chances are upon reflection I will end up deleting or editing it, but I feel I should put it out there.

First off, I would never kick a man when he's down, and I wish all the best to Theo, and hope he recovers enough to live a normal life. Keep getting better!

But as one who has had a life changing injury in the sport of kites, I have to say that there are times when I see people doing things beyond their ability, or "pushing it to the extreme" kinda thing that I find upsetting. And this unfortunate young lad personifies that image.

So my point in this op-ed opine:

Take it a little easy, don't throw radical tricks or jumps within a line length of rocks and shore

Don't let the adrenalin push you to do things you (or others around you) might regret.

Kite safe, have fun, live to kite another day.

I did hear from Levi that recently Theo fed himself a whole meal by himself which was a big step. I don't know of any progress more recent than that.

I stand by those sentiments

And if just one intermediate kiter thinks twice about the repercussions their actions might have, it just might prevent another tragedy.

Good to hear of your progress, Theo.

SO what your saying is an advanced kiter wouldnt have hurt himself in the situation Theo was in? Ive seen people take much worse crashes into shallow water, I think in Theos situation it really was just a lot of bad luck, and a little bit of bad decision making. Either way I dont see how your posts are relevant what so ever to someone who is wondering how Theo is doing. Have fun mowing the lawn out there.

Regardless of your skill level when you kite near hard objects or in shallow water you are increasing the odds of a single error (usually a combination of errors) becoming a costly mistake. Most all of us have taken greater risks at some point in our life., mostly when we were younger and had that feeling of invincibility. Most have also lost friends and acquaintances to injury and death due to elevating the risk of an activity. As you have these experiences and take on additional responsibilities such as a family you start taking less risks. This means more mellow kite sessions and more lawn mowing. It certainly does not take as much technical skill as the wake style riding done in the kiddie pond and hitting sliders.

Hopefully, when my kids are old enough to kite they will listen to me and reduce the risk of life changing events. Most likely they wont hear a word I say, but, they might listen to someone else like Dangler posting something he knows will meet resistance but is the truth. Just maybe they will listen enough to kite in water that is a little deeper, a little further from rocks...

Terese, Levi's mom told me that turns 18 on Friday- March 30 and that soon he will be going to a rehab facility near Munich. Then early May he will transfer to Switzerland for more intense rehab for up to 3 months. "The doctors are still optimistic.
Still little change with left arm coming back. He's very independent with his power chair, in good spirits but very anxious for this next step."

Im not condoning doing tricks in shallow water. But pushing the limits doesnt always result in such injuries as long as you know what you are doing. Also I saw the crash and he was definitely kiting within his ability. I guess I was just saying this could happen to anyone if the perfect storm of things line up, which they did in this case.

Definitely though don't try air tricks in super shallow water, and always ride within your abilities.

I never met Theo either, but from what I have heard he is a really great kid. I hope and pray for continuing recovery. He's got a damn difficult road in front of him; I only hope that in a similar circumstance I would do as well mentally as he seems to be doing.

Go Theo! Cody Cerf, who also had neck injury the same day as Theo, is back on water locally here in SLO. Saw him his first day out a few months ago and the smile on his face was priceless. He's now ripping it up now that our season is in fully swing with wind and waves:-)

Best wishes to Theo in your rehab efforts this year!
