How do you like the volt so far? What kind of range does it ACTUALLY get on a charge?

Have 1799 miles on vehicle so far. Clark County PUD charges 8 cents per kilowatt hour. It takes 10 hours to charge battery on 120 volt charger, so 80 cents to go ~ 30 miles on battery only (max battery range). Battery mileage will vary with environmental controls, speed, topography and so on. Expected my home power bill to go up but no noticeable change yet (compared to last year). Should have 240 volt charger soon will decrease charge time to 4 hours. So far I’ve used 2 tanks of fuel (about 18 gallons) and quite a few charge cycles to hit that 1799 number. BTW it takes premium fuel only, high compression engine for generator. Plenty of room for kite gear with back seats down, car is very peppy and fun to drive. It has all kinds of configuration options on touch screens/dash controls and also phone app with internet diagnostics. Wife was overwhelmed at first and refused to drive it (said it was too complicated) but a few times behind wheel and it’s growing on her. I’m under no illusions, don’t expect to recoup cost of vehicle with fuel savings but it sure is nice to see high mileage numbers. On a drive to Hillsboro car reported 143 miles per gallon on battery only. That number came way down on drive home but if I had a place to plug in; now that would be good mileage. Very Happy

So... Could one drive 200 miles to Hood River in this thing? What is your mpg when the battery is dead and you've got the $5 per gallon premium running?

0 to 60 in how many seconds?

Looking at the Nissan Leaf as our second car. About $30k after rebate. They seem expensive but my current SUV gasoline bill for a month of driving is about $250 but will jump to over $500 during prime kite months when searching for wind.

From the Leaf brochure: "Driving electric isn't for everybody. 70% of us drive about 40 miles per day while 95% of us drive less than 100 miles per day."

Leaf range is 100 miles. 90 mph top speed. Seats 5. Electrics are all torque so quicker than you expect. It wont get us to Portland and back but Stevie to Rufus etc is all good.

Hello all,

If you are into the elec car thing Jeff Blackman at Hood River High School and myself-(Chris Hipskind at Columbia High School) and several other high school programs have students building electric cars in our shop class. Jeff hosts a local race in Hood River down by the Movie Theater on Sat April 14th around 11am.

Adults and high school students are currently building cars (go carts more like it) that get over 800 mpg (energy equivilant). Too bad they aren't street legal.

If you want to get involved contact Jeff or myself. The kids love having more mentors to lend a hand. Here are a few sites for more info:

Our build site is http://whitesalmonschools.net/ecar/

The national site is: http://www.electrathonamerica.org/Welcome_to_Electrathon_America.html

Or maybe you have thought of building your own electric motorcycle? http://www.instructables.com/id/Build-Your-Own-ELECTRIC-MOTORCYCLE/

Or if you are addicted to speed? http://whitesalmonschools.net/ecar/electric-drag-racing-on-opb/

Cheers!
