I was looking at the ikite sensor for Clatsop spit today and it showed 20-30 mph winds with one single spike that went over 80 mph. I figure it is probably just a sensor anomally - but do gusts like that really happen? 30 to 80 in a few seconds?
Either way - I figure I am going to hit the ponds tomorrow. Warmer water, lower winds than Rooster (my smallest kite is 9m), easy launch. I figure get there by 10 am and the tide should still be fine.

Oh ma gawud...The D at the Ponds? I'm supposed to coach my kids basketball game but I might just have to bail on that!
I guess it's early for the wind and the tide...let the Dangle-pocolypse of 2012 commence!

Sweet score you guys. The ponds looking epic! How cold was the water, wondering if a 5/4 would keep me warm for a couple of hours? By the way, how do you guys like those yellow/blue drysuits?

There were 3 other guys there wearing wetsuits. They seemed to be just fine. The Kokatat drysuits are probably the best drysuits made. Full gore-tex, nice and dry.

Ponds was fantastic on Saturday also! I was perfectly powered on my 9 meter and kited for two hours. I was wearing a 5/4 wetsuit, 1.5 mil gloves, no hood and was perfectly warm. I could have kited for 4 hours - but family was wanting to so some other beach activities.

There was plenty of space. I started at about 10:30 am and kited til 1pm. There were about 10 of us rotating into the pond and a couple kiters went out around the point. The tacks were almost as long as tacks would have been at rooster.

Just wanna remind everyone, that all this riding is on an outgoing tide. Once outside the pond, if you lose your kite, things could get dicey very quickly. if you're out of the brown water into the green, without your kite you'll probably get swept into the bar. If that happens, your odds of survival are very, very, slim. Even in the brown water, it could be difficult to get back to shore. Watch where you are and keep your head in the game. If you are out there, and your buddy gets swept into the bar, get to your cell phone quickly and call 911, get hold of the coast guard. Without a rescue, a swimmer in the bar on an outgoing tide has zero chance of survival. They don't call it the graveyard of the Pacific for nothing.
