WTF??? Didn't want to hijack the post about the accident in CR so thought I would start another one. Jack, an IKO certified instructor, said that IKO trains them to QR from their harness if a line or something gets hung up on it.

1) I have never heard of this as being something that should be practiced.
2) If it is, why don't the instructors teach this?
3) What is the best quick releasing harness.
4) I am in Nitrous shorts. Guess I'm fu$&ed!

Never heard of this, I think a knife would be a bit quicker though. If shit gets that bad, there is little you can do but go for the ride.

This subject has been discussed in a number or old Kiteforum.com threads. Here are 2 of them:

quick release panties for you nitrous shorts...

with Forrest...

just got one of these (my old knife CRKT Bearclaw rusted badly - and then later fell out of the sheaf - the plastic seemed to loosen)

Nice looking knife Gman. Did it come with a sheath? Or putting it in the little harness pouch?

This one has a beefier plastic sheath and lock in setup included - seems solid - i sew it to the harness with fishing line

The "h1" steel is supposed to hold up to salt water - guess titanium is rated best for corrosion resistance but since the last knife just fell out didn't want to spend more than $100

In all honesty, I think just riding unhooked in the waves makes it way safer. When you fall the bar is in your hands rather than near your body. Also, unhooking for tricks gives you more experience with a downed kite. I've been drug several times by the death-spiraling kite and every time I was able to recover by staying calm and waiting till the kite spiraled low enough to hit the water.

If you kite long enough, all these situations will happen to you. Be prepared.

Sorry for any misunderstanding but David had brought it up in the course, showed us on the beach with his harness , using a similar scenario as reasoning to do so and I thought it good as in the case here , leash stuck on the hook .

It was not part of training for students in the program . Again excuse me .

True dat. It's not "if" its "when". Every year I have situations arise that test my love for the sport.

Lines will wrap and pull you senseless quickly so as Forrest says....stay calm. Practicing how to pull your knife from any blind washing machine position is not easy...but at least visualize because the time you think you can "save it" compared to when you decide to "grab and cut" is precious.
