Sun Dec 11, 11 6:05 pm Headed to Maui in mid Jan!! |

Curious as to anyones experiences or opinions as to where to head in Jan. Was last in Maui two years ago and kited from Kite Beach. I was pretty new and not too stoked with the launch although it was really no big deal when you are use to the launches around here. I have noticed lately that the kihei sensor shows a good 9 meter wind blowing out of the north every day. Appears as if the wind picks up speed coming across the island due to it being stronger than Kanaha or Ho'okipa! In january are you limited to the north shore? Are there any other launches that are better and that anyone recomends on the north shore or south shore? Can you sail from Kihei somewhere so I can walk from my pad there? thanks to anyone who takes the time to reply.
On another note my son want to take some windsurfing lessons while he is there. Any thoughts or recomendations of places to stay away from. thanks again, Blake |

The North Shore launches are a lot more filled in when the wind is more north, but then you're wave set up isn't as nice. My trip last year was all E/NE. The launching and landing was a beeotch, but once you got our there it was smackin!
Kihei launch is at the Maui Sunset hotel I'm told. |

The typical Maui trades are ne which is the setup for north coast. Sometimes it does go more northerly which can make Kihei rideable. Kona wind which is a more rare southerly is also good for Kihei . I launched at a nice grassy park called waipulani ( I think that was the name- started with a W anyhow). It was gusting in the 40s. Nice to have someone launch you there for sure. _________________ Haole |

If you have kids and like to ride waves, North Shore: Spreckelsville, Paia, Haiku, in that order of preference. The north shore beaches are far better for kids.
If you just like to mow the lawn, or are a beginner surfer, looking to surf more small waves: Kihei or Lahaina. |

Just got back last night. North Shore mostly for sure and didn't need anything smaller than my 9 meter most of the time. The swell was in the last few days with some of them breaking overhead... awesome!
The launch at "Action Beach" where the kiteschool vans are can be a bear but this time I went just to the east to "Naish Beach" and it was a whole lot better. Just be a little careful if you lose your board in the boneyard between the two beaches... coral got me a little bit but not too bad.
We stayed in Kihei and got one session in at the Maui Sunset Hotel launching from the grass but for the most part it was offshore on the south side.
Got some stoke and didn't need a wetsuit! |

I am also heading over around mid January. I am torn between staying north of kanapali or minutes from kite beach. Any thoughts? |

Yes, Kanapali is ages away from kitebeach... An hour on average, longer if there is traffic. If you only want to surf, then it would be a good place, but for kiting you're going to be completely hating life with that drive. |

Thanks Forest. I went with the room in Waiehu, any favorites in the area. |

We stay in kihei. Not as chill as paea but central to any direction we can head. 20 minutes to thousand peaks and 20 minutes to naish beach. Good sushi during happy hour in town also. Little surf right in kihei for my youngest one:-) |

Waiehu got some stellar surf right out front. Go down to where the old washed out parking lot is, paddle out from there, great longboarding even when it's overhead. You can kite there too, but it's onshore and the waves are onshore... But that's where you see Niccolo Porcella boosting those huge strapless airs in the videos.
Bring lots of aloha to the people that live there, they're the real locals. |
