At the airport on the way back from maui and they tried to bend us over without lube. We threw them twenty dollars over and told them to suck our balls. on a positive note Kite beach was sick, wind every day and the locals ruled. We will be back for sure with lube next
time.

You need to go to the airport expecting to pay for your checked baggage. If they don't charge you consider yourself lucky. It's better to plan for the worst case scenario.
The airlines policies are only going to get worse and they are going to start charging for more of the services that were once included. I don't like it either but I can't do anything to change it.

They are notorious. In June they posted how much money they made from the bag extortion business.
http://www.staradvertiser.com/news/20110614_hawaiian_airlines_bags_54M_in_fees.html?id=123798699
...and that was before they raised their fees a lot.
I sent a golfbag with kitegear, they called me on the speaker system AFTER the bag was checked in and we were in the waiting area and then on my phone arguing to get a $35 fee for the bag. It must have costed them more than $35 to try to claim the fee...that they never got.
It isn't even that they charge for kiting, it is that they do not charge for same size, just different content.

After reading the article, I do not think the bag fees are going to be going away anytime soon. As we continue into our sports evolution, we are going to continue to be paying bag fees until the resorts start absorbing the bag fees such as golf courses do for golf clubs (not a fact, just and assumption know how many bags of clubs get checked, if the airlines were not subsidized some how, how could they resist so long with out charging golfers).
This subject always sucks.

No, there isn't any subsidies from the golf courses. I can't really speak to this anymore because I don't want to get fired.
If I were shopping for a smartphone, I'd look into the TOTAL cost before I bought something. I'd probably be more inclined to buy a smartphone if it included the app I needed, than the smartphone that did not include the app I needed. I'd probably email the bad smartphone maker and very politely explain why they aren't getting my business and include links to the reviews I wrote on the app specific web site (nwApps.com) as well as the smartphone specific website. Only if that happens will Smartphone makers ever stop charging for one app while including others.

When I was returning from Maui the lady at the airport "delta" noticed my bag was just over 50 pounds and I was going to take out something to get it under 50 and she said not to worry. Then she charged me more for the bag being overweight after saying it was ok. I expect to pay for this large bag but what she did was wrong!

Fri Nov 25, 11 2:54 pm Similar baggage issue with continental/united |
|
|
After many trips on continental they charged me, for the first time, the $100 because bag was too big. (Dakine wagon 55" length)
Lots of arguing which ultimately led to me paying.
The listening TSA guy nearby, took my side etc. He said it wasn't right!
Customer service at Continental was helpful. They gave me Jeffery Smisek, CEO, address.
I wrote him a nice letter.
It included one of their napkins from the flight, which on it was printed:
"Planes change, values don't. Your priorities are our priorities".
This went into the letter for Jeffery...

Flew from Maui-Oahu on Hawaiian then on to Alaska on Alaska Airlines last month. Checked bags all the way thru from Maui. $45 total for two surfboards in one bag and a large hockey bag filled with kites.
There is no secret anymore so I keep wondering why everyone asks on this forum. Keep it under 50 lbs and smile or fill your coffin and pay $75. Its a crap shoot everytime time.

and never, ever give Continental your business if possible. They are the most expensive every time and place embargos on surfboards traveling to central america in the summer.

Good idea using your hockey bag. You can cram a ton of stuff in a hockey bag.

I have used most air lines over the last seven years to kite at several locations .
I had read about some issues that are mentioned many times on several forums .
I called the air lines baggage personnel and asked them what the deal is ??!! ( in a nutshell )They want easy stuff to handle without problems too and loose or exposed sports equipment is a drag . ? So if I had a bag made that fit all my gear with proper labeling , ie owners name and address and nothing exposed also keeping it under 50 lbs and I should be good to go ?
I did just that and can put a couple of kites boards and harness lines etc. in it at 48-49 lbs.
I have used , Continental , US Air , Delta . Air Canada , West Jet .
I have been fortunate not to have been bothered in any way by any airline . They ask "what's in the bag ?" . I tell them " my sporting gear for kiting " . I'm only asked to take it to oversize as it's a big bag .
I use the straps as shoulder straps for carrying when a cart isn't readily available .
I take the straps and fins off the boards for a better fit , tucking those items in the sides , !59 door and a 140 Mako .
I use a 9m and a 12m kite , related gear .
I was charged $140 Can. to have the bag made . I went to a place that makes awnings etc.
Oh , and I never lock it either , there seems to be an issue with that . It's like your telling the handlers they are not to be trusted ! I wouldn't care for that label either .
Check it out
And good luck with your travels

No probs on Alaska. Used an actual golf bag under 50 pounds. Two drivers and kites and boards. 40 bucks roundtrip. Also surfboard rental for 12 days for 140.

Lady at the counter in Portland knew I had kite gear and even though it was oversized she only charged me the normal $50... Said she couldn't guarantee anything for the trip home so we'll see. So far it's been a pleasure with Hawaiian. Looking forward to getting some this week!

I made 3 custom bags for my family that are about 1 inch smaller than the airlines size rules. I never make them too heavy, like never over 45 lbs. I do have to pay the normal bag fee but never over. SOmetimes if I have a lot of stuff I will send it FedEx ground and its cheaper. NAd yes, FedE ground goes to Hawaii.
