I want to make it perfectly clear that his ride to the airport involved no ball sucking whatsoever.

I picked him up, dropped him off, no sucking of the balls at any time.

These comments are strictly about the airlines and not about the bro-taxi.

Just thought I should point that out in case there was any confusion Exclamation Exclamation

Well I'm in this boat of travel to Maui in a few weeks and I'm shopping for a travel bag. I do have a 6 foot surfboard I haven't used yet and didn't plan to take it. I do plan on taking my mako king and could only find one golf type bag that it will fit. I already ordered a bag big enough to haul a surfboard but looks like I will incur a $75 charge each way on Alaska. Now I ponder should I buy what will to appear to be a larger than normal golf bag that matches the surfboard travel bag that fits the King or just take the big bag and pop my surfboard cherry in Maui.

Life is too short to worry about baggage fees. Maui without a surfboard seems like a bad dream. Go big or stay home!

You make me feel way better on this since I got the surfboard travel bag coming. As long as I'm not over 50lbs or 115" defined by "multiple sporting piece exceptions" I should float on by on Alaska.

I was finding it hard for hype to disguise as golf equipement. Why the discrimination. Even under the winsurfing exception wasn't the 115" rule since that wouldn't make it. I think kiteboard equipement should fit along the same dimensions as skis/snowboard equipement which just defines articles as a bag for the sticks and a boot bag.

My bag is going to be about 108" linear and fit up to a 6'4". Still hate to pay an over length and or overweight fees. The next sized bag down would fit my mako king and come in at about 95" linear and have a golfy looking symbol on it and look huge for only clubs. Still thinking about picking it up but I'll just see what happens with this setup since this bag will fit the surfboard.

This has got to be one of the craziest subjects. I probably got more than a few hours of reading and figured why sweat a few extra bucks. Sure there is airlines just charging way too much. So after more review on Alaska's rules I should only have to pay a $75.00 oversize fee unless considered a multiple sporting pieces then nothing unless I'm over 50 lbs and even with that its only an addition $30 to total $50. Another goodthing about Alaska is they don't charge for both oversize and overweight just the higher of the two. So I'm good to 100lbs and hopefully only pay $50 instead of $20 for overweight and have my toys. I'll let you all know how it goes. Another consideration too is each piece of luggage is only insured for $3,300 so it would be wise to split up the cargo in 2 bags or pay for extra insurance.

Look very closely at the fine print. Most airlines DO NOT cover any kind of sporting goods. If they lose it, or break it, tough cookies. Make sure your homeowners or renters insurance covers you.

So I ended up having to pay $20 a bag. My Cabrina Golf bag 165 is huge, so big I had to recline the front passenger seat of our car and have my wife ride in the back. More than double the size of the guy behind me in line with a real golf bag. My bag weighed 58 lbs so I opened it up and pulled out the 1 SS Bag with a kite, helmet and pump out right in front of the check-in person. They asked what I had in there and I said kiteboarding equipement. Ah cool she says. So yea $20 bucks! Alaska Rocks! I'll have to load a pic later. $80 dollars total for 4 check in's.

I am telling you it is all up to the clerk at the desk!

SUCK UP! Be a pleasant person and it will work. THink of all the jackasses they have to deal with everyday, be the nice one and ask how THEIR day is going, and you will get the world.

I think I am 7 for 7 on different airlines...

PDX is usually really cool it's coming back from Maui that has always got us. Although seems like to me since they started charging everyone for bags it's not such a big deal and when we do get charged it's like $50 max (per bag)

Bottom line is be nice and don't be a dumbass with a 100lb bag and expect to get by with paying nothing and then arguing. It ruins it for everyone else. I've traveled A LOT with coffin bags filled with boards. Every time the guy with the heaviest bag has the most damage. The lighter your bag the less they throw it around and there's a better chance it will be on top of everyone else's bag and not on the bottom.

The last two months I have traveled to La Ventana and Maui. Maui was united and I was charged 25 bucks each direction. No big deal as it my gear and cheaper than renting other stuff!! La Ventana via Alaska and Horizon = 20 bucks each direction. Board, two kites, helmet, harness, vests, booties bindings, golf ball and glove just in case they ask for something golf like. No big deal on either airline. Just dont pack it over about 48 lbs so you have a fluff factor when they hold it on the scale and put pressure to keep it from falling over. So far so good!!!

Funny as I was typing my earlier post today from Seatac, my last name was called party of 2. i thought they were going to get me. False alarm another party. But later in Maui I had a front row seat to see them unload. I wish I had a video of it. About as bad as the Fedex man last Christmas. They were throwing almost everything. The last 2 things to go into the cart, after they were dropped on the asphalt, was a surfboard with fins up and my bag with 2 boards and 3 kites right on it. The surboard owner watched wondering about his fins as I was doing a play by play. Most of the 8 people witnessing it were kinda shocked to see the big locals throwing our chit! My nice new bag looks molested. I think I would now send kites in a hard suit case and put some more foam in the bag for boards only. I won't even go into what it like driving a rental car around here.

Bag is almost 6 foot like me. Should fit a 5'8" surfboard

Found this in the golf bag
