I have done a search and found a few mentions about snowkiting Whiteriver canyon on Mt Hood - but has anyone successfully done it? If so - were there any problems? What was the wind strength and direction? Is the wind squirrelly in there? I drive by there all the time with my season pass to Meadows and some days it looks awful tempting................

Yes, WRC has some snowkiting spots. The 3 locations that I have kited in the canyon are: down at the road with all the kids sledding on a SE wind. Higher up at about the 6,000' level there is a great wide open plateau that can be accessed from either Timberline or Meadows (avalanche awareness is essential). Works on S-SE winds but due SE is best. And, further up at about the 9,000' level is some fantastic snowkiting terrain with epic scenery and views. This is expert only terrain and mountaineering (glacier, crevasse, and avy) skills are required. Light wind from W,SW,S,SE,and E work. This spot is dangerous in strong wind. Have FUN.

Thx for the info. I figured that SE wind would probably be the best. I have decades of backcountry, avi, glacier experience. But I would probably just stick to the lower levels to keep things simple. I just want get out there and combine my 2 favorite sports without having to drive all the way to Wyoming.........

Any issues with the forest service?

Tried to kite white river many times but always get skunked.
South winds are super rare and further up the canyon is always
Swirly and gusty. Anything above 6000' gets steep and crevassed.
Not recommended.

Yeah - I figure south winds probably mostly hit when we get those big wet pineapple express storms. Still - to hear that someone has had success - I will watch the wind patterns around Meadows real closely now.

Didn't Aaron Sales jump that whole cliff at the top after some dude base jumped it or something? I remember reading about it somewhere.
