Wed Oct 26, 11 7:13 am Alaska Air to LaPaz |

I am heading down to LaPaz this winter and wonder if anybody has any info on the current trends on how Alaska Airlines charges us for our gear? My plan is to carry 1 board and two kites and all the rest of my crap... less pump as my friends that I am staying with have plenty of pumps. I plan on checking the kite gear and doing carry on for my other stuff.
Thanks

Alaska are usually pretty good. Done it a couple of times with no problems. Had a kite bag with 3 kites and a twin tip plus other stuff. No problems. Was careful to put some golf stickers on the kite bag. Make sure it weighs less than 50lbs. You could carry one kite on board with other stuff in the kite bag. Seen other people do this and I am doing that this year since I will have no board. Sent my directional down with someone else. |

i fly alaska as much as possible because of their reasonable baggage charges.
regular luggage is $20
oversized or overweight (50 pounds) is $50.
a golf bag is oversized but they will usually charge you $20 if they really think it's golf equipment.
One board, 2 kites, bars, wetsuits will be under 50 pounds.
Expect to pay either $20 or $50 depending on the size of your bag.
go to alaska air website and read the baggage rules.
You could use the curbside checki and bribe/tip the porter to not charge you extra,,,,, but there's no curbside allowed for international flights.
Surfboards fall under the oversized category - $50. |

I dig alaska. Reliable and for sure resonable for baggage charges. Just flew with them to maui and with a 8 foot surfboard bag with 4 boards, 2 kites and everything else that weighed 95 pds and I paid $70. In this day and age, that is a steal. Hawiian or United would have charged me close to double that, if not more. I personally only fly with Alaska whenever I can for this reason. Most other US carriers are completly out of control with there baggage charges IMO. |

Alaska is my favorite airline. Make sure you can travel with your bars as a carry on. I bring a kite magazine that show the sport so they understand that the bar isn't a weapon. I've been hassled in the past. The extra baggage fees seem to change often, so I would call. It also helps to print out their fees from their web site & have them with you. They seem to get you on the way back. Last time, I had to shell out $100 bucks.....Arggh! _________________ Be kind to Kooks |
