So after skiing my entire life, and kiting for the last 3 years, I am finally ready to combine the two sports. Being a NE PDXer, what are the closest spots that I can pop my snowkiting cherry?
Thanks in advance for the tips. |

Book some tickets to Boise and hit Camas Valley... I hear Southwest is running a special right now. |

I would drive. it's a little bit of a drive but if you leave early morning, you will be there in time for a dinner time sess.
If you flew, you would have to pay for all your kites/boards there and back and rent a car from boise for the time you are there.
Just my two cents.
If you're going to fly, make it count, go to ut/mt/wy for some epic conditions. _________________ Respect the kite, respect the beaches |

Southwest has bags fly free... $35 bucks one way right now, that's cheaper than gas. |

Can anyone give some recommendations for beginner friendly boot/board/ski set-ups to enter in snowkiting?
Doing alot of looking around different sites, but kinda sensory overload! |

Flexible , park boots, I have some dc park boots, flexible bindings, I have Burton's , and a snowboard with no or minimal sidecut. Got a snowkite specific board online, and went to 2nd wind for the boots and bindings, told them I needed a snowkite set up, and they were very helpful |

I just got a trainer kite one week ago, so I am no expert, but I snowmobiled for years. Marble Mountain snopark on Mt St Helens accesses a two lane wide, fairly straight and flat, tree lined road that leads to Lahar viewpoint. If the winds right maybe a small kite and you putt the 4 mile road to or from the Lahar, otherwise you beg a ride from a snowmobiler; I have seen snowboarders do this plenty, or maybe you know somebody that snowmobiles. The trees at Lahar are very short and most dissapear when the snow gets deep, it is wide and gently slopes to the base of the mountain, so I think you could kite from here straight up to the top of the mountain or you can take a right at the base of the mountain and hit the Plains of Abraham which is above the treeline. From the Plains of Abraham you can pop over to the north side of the mountain which is virtually treeless from 1981.
About 5 miles before Marble Mt. snopark is Cougar snopark. Their is a fairly large, fairly flat clearcut right next to it, and 2.5 miles down the snow trail, two lane treelined, is another open rolly area that gets you access to the south side of Mt St Helens. You might have to hike a bit or bum a ride, because their is a strip of trees between this open play area and the base of the mountain. Once you get their it is wide open snow fields, and this is the easiest accesss to the summit, I rode my snowmobile to the summit of St Helens from this side. The snowmobiles make a nice packed trail in and out of here, so you could snowshoe if you had to and you could probably ski all the way back to the parking lot. Also you can reach the summit from the Lahar side it is just steeper.
I tell you what, unless I learn it to be impossible, one of my big kite goals is to drag myself to the summit of St Helens via the south side.
Like I said, though, I have no real kite xp yet. |

For those of us without snowboarding experience, does this mean that the edge of the board should be straight, as opposed to curved in a little?
Also will my water kites work on snow? I was under the impression that you just rigged smaller than normal on snow unless you were going to get a foil specifically for it. _________________ Captain kook; always wrong. |

"does this mean that the edge of the board should be straight, as opposed to curved in a little? "
Yes, it helps if there is no sidecut, makes it easier to go upwind
I use my water kites for the snow, you don't need to have foils. |

Just to add to Undertows good advice:
- less sidecut, but also trying to get a true twin tip snowboard (usually a pipe board) will allow to you to ride equally well in both directions. The only tricky thing about this choice is if you are taller or heavier and need a board over 160cm (most pipe boards are 157 and smaller) _________________ Pure Stoke Sports
