Here is a question for the guys that did a Dalton-to-Rooster downwinder, yesterday when the meter (iWindsurf- RR Light 66) was saying 20 to 38MPH at from 2 PM to 4PM:
"Where was the steadiest wind along the 6 mile course?"... not the highest, but the STEADIEST...
I kited (7M) about halfway down there during that time and the character of the wind was ... a 10 second HOLE of about 10 MPH followed by a 10 second fluctuating high wind period of from 25 to 35 MPH...(just shy of spray blowing off the water, which happens at about 40MPH)...
I think that the wind was out of the NE (typical for 'Big East') all the time.
Was it a lot steadier right off the RR Parking lot? Or where there big holes followed by big gusts all the way from Dalton to RR?
Just gathering data, for the purpose of giving advice to those who want to kite the 'Big East' winds of the Gorge in the Fall.
Please, no "I love Roster...I hate Rooster" discussion needed... just the facts!
Thanks.

Chriss, I wouldn't say that too loud, down there on the island..."not that there is anything wrong with it"...
Hey, just kidding!...
Mark, thanks for the "just the facts, Mam, just the facts". I kind of thought that might have been the case, with the steadier wind.

I did the downwinder from Dalton to the east stairs of Rooster yesterday from about 2:20 to just past 4pm--7m with TT. IMHO the wind and water was not that good till about the Bridal Veil launch, it improved right at the Walls on the Washington side/right at the eastern most point of Rooster beach, where the sand dune is probably like 40' tall. From there down it was steadiest. Dalton to Bridal Veil there were some lulls and mostly chop. The launch was pretty wind shadowed at Dalton, but probably a bit better than the Bridal Veil launch.
I didn't see it, but earlier in the day I was told that people with kites where jumping off the 40'ish high sand cliff and the east end of the beach, without a board, and flying their kite for like 35 to 40 seconds and landing downwind in the shallow waters of the river.
When I was in that area I took a best estimated count of kites in the air and I came up with 40 riders in the water. However, there were more than that throughout the entire day. What a great Fall day!
By the way, sometimes I love Rooster and other times I hate it. Also, there is no way in hell it is 6 miles from Bridal Veil to Rooster. I'd say more like 2 1/2 miles--you must of got that measurement from Youkai.

Sasquatch,
Yeah, you're right about the distance... it just seemed that long, the day I broke my rib doing the downwinder...then hobbled through the island, dragging my 2.5 M sail... first person I met was wearing a big festive bow ribbon...tied right around his... well, I'd rather not say...I wish I had one of those gadgets, that the "Men in Black" guys use to erase memories...I'd keep in the car, at Rooster's parking lot!
Thanks for the trip report!

Yeah, I kited upwind from the eastern most end of the parking lot past the end of rooster beach. It was holey towards the end of the rooster beach and lighter winds over all, enough so that I stopped going upwind and went back to the areas with smoothest, strongest wind; Oregon side at the end of the parking lot. Was on a 7, probably could have been on a 9 east of the beach.

From "the Google"... Dalton to Rooster... looks like 4 miles...and they might be right, that today, you could get there 5 minutes.
I didn't even know that Google gave time estimates on downwind kiteboarding trips. I have heard that some of the guys at Google kiteboard... so I guess, those were probably the ones that gave the time of travel estimate.
