The family oriented longboard contest "Rogue Gathering" will be taking place on Sat and Sun 9/10 and 9/11 at South Beach here in Newport. The computer models are indicating that Saturday will be quite windy with north winds during the time the contest is taking place. There have been problems with kiters riding thru the contest area in past years which really pisses off the surf contestants along with creating a poor image of kite surfers.
Therefore, to prevent conflicts ride north or south of the flags planted in the beachsand which defines the contest area. And if passing across the contest zone ride well outside the surfzone. We can all get along those days of the contest if we respect each others space. The Rogue only happens one weekend a year and then we can return to our ways of wave slashing across the whole beach. If it is good surfing conditions, then I recommend checking out the contest rides and mingling with the cool people on the beach. This could be another opportunity to present our sport to other ocean users in a positive light by ripping while showing respect. |
