You can debate on NWKite, in the newspaper or at the informational meetings, but the decision makers are supposed to work with the formal public record. I can tell you that formal comments really do get read and they do matter.
This maze of public hearings and decision points can be very confusing. Because this is near the water and a freeway exit it's even more complicated. If you care about this project I encourage you to do a little research about what questions are decided by which agency at which time. The City Planning Director and the Port Director can help you navigate this process and get the right comment to the right entity at the right time. They can also put you on a "notification list" so you'll get a personal invitation to the public meetings and hearings. Hearings happen even if it's windy, but you can always comment in writing. |
Excellent instructions Arthur. As usual, thank you very much for keeping your finger on the pulse by lurking along in our forums and providing advice when/where it is needed.
Reminder to everyone, if you want your opinion read and respected, then make sure to share it with the ones that make the decisions.
Posting on the forum is okay for your peers, but in the bigger picture of things, it is only preaching to the choir.
Reminder - Meeting at the Hood River Hotel on Thurs at 7pm

It's OK by me if you have to move the cable park to Portland so you can accommodate the thousands of people that are going to swarm it

You people making arguments about being against the other hotel make no sense. Yes we were against the other hotel because it would have been built DIRECTLY UPWIND of the sandbar, as in make the wind shit at the sandbar. This hotel wont obviously as it is being built in line with other structures currently in the area such as the 76 and the HUGE GREEN BUILDING that was there previously. Man I wish we still had that piece of shit as opposed to a dope hotel and cable park...

Just to be clear, I didn't come out against the cable park. I simply brought up the idea that these things have impacts both environmentally and socially. It seemed that it was an open forum discussion and people kept touting this oxygenation thing that as a biologist with a knowledge of these sorts of things was kind of funny.
There are laws in place in approvals to be had, there are safeguards but again, as someone that has permitted similar projects and witnessed the environmental mitigation efforts go by the wayside as soon as something was built; I felt it necessary to raise a little bit of caution. nothing more nothing less.
But yeah, a wave machine would be fucking rad.

Here is a aerial picture of the area. I guess that there will be plenty of discussion of the subjects of "parking spaces" and "traffic flow" before the project receives approval. It seems like there would have to be 90 parking spaces dedicated to the hotel guests, maybe 20 more for the hotel staff, and maybe 30 more for the restaurant customers, and maybe 30 more for the cable park customers, plus parking space for delivery trucks, temporary parking spaces for hotel guests checking in and baggage loading, turning around of vehicles, etc.
I wonder if some of this parking space will have to be located on the first floor level, under the hotel?
As far as traffic flow goes... will everyone have to drive around behind the gas station?

Please come to our town hall meeting tomorrow night. We will be sharing the site plan with everyone there. Our preliminary site plan has also been published in the Hood River News last Saturday. We will not be building a parking structure or any subterranean parking.
People going to the sandbar will no longer be routed on the south side of the gas station, along the freeway. Access to the sandbar will be improved via a new access road and pedestrian access way that will bisect the Nichols boat works property.

Nice to see that Maui is involved. I like what he has done in, and for Hood River thus far. I think it's a nice spot for a nice looking hotel and business office. While the cable is not my thing, my teenage sons and their friends are stoked out of their minds about it. I think it's a perfect fit for that basin and will get a lot of use and generate a lot of smiles. I spent a couPle of hours looking at pictures and YouTube videos of cable parks around the globe. It looks absurdly fun.
Having said all of that, I hope dissenters make their voices and concerns heard loud and clear, as there are undoubtedly a host of issues that need to be addressed for this project to fit Hood River.
Something that I see evolving in Hood River as a parent and teacher of teenagers is a surge in the younger set coming
down to the water front. A lot of young kiters to be sure, but also young SUPers, a fairly large group of young windsurfers and lots of kids jumping off the docks, piers etc. I think this is a great thing for the kids, and the town of Hood River. Just as the park at ski resorts is not my thing, the cable park may not be either. BUT, I sure love how into it the kids are

Stoked! finally, ever since seeing the ones in New Zealand i have been hoping for one around here. the closest one currently is in Redding and i wouldnt even call it a cable park, more a single feature water transplant. i would rather drive their for an in and out burger
