I think everyone went down to Surf Expo! Pepi Gerald was at the Port Commission meeting as well, so he can correct me if necessary.
Honestly, I think the presentation to the Port went quite well. We received some good questions during the Commission meeting, and the staff at the Port is also preparing a list of written questions for us. I hope to receive those in the next few weeks.
I also have some great renderings of the retail & office building. Hopefully, they will satisfy the guys over on iwindsurf.com I will post them online as soon as we've submitted for our site plan review at the end of this month. _________________ Will Naito - Naito Development

As Will noted, the Port Commission meeting seemed to go over well. No alarms or big concerns were raised, except for one Commissioners interest in filling in the Basin and starting a dairy or fruit processing manufacturer which seemed a little out of left field.
Also ran into Will down at Surf Expo over in the wake section meeting up with others and getting more familiarized with the wake industry.
I think the Naito's are heading in the right direction right now. They still have a good list of permits and contracts to take care of, but for their nature of business, this seems to be par for the course.
We look forward to this sort of development opportunity both economically as a business and recreationally as boardsports enthusiasts. _________________ Pure Stoke Sports

Yeah cause there is no room to do that shit in Odell or Parkdale. The port is the biggest crew of jokes around. _________________ I heart dangling |

That is nuts. Wouldn't that be a hazard to the waterway with all the processing? That must involve astringent cleaners and the associated industry byproducts washing right into the Columbia? If this is going to even maybe happen? I think people should think about protesting. What is the proposal exactly? Do they have a company ready to do that lined up? Sounds kind of scary. Those port guys are smoking something whack to even consider this. |

The question of filling the basin was raised by Commissioner Shortt. What I heard was somewhat different, though. I thought he proposed filling in the basin to create a farmers' market for local businesses in the Hood River Valley. However, there is no official proposal, company involved, or funds allocated to do this project. Commissioner Shortt's suggestion was, in a sense, theoretical.
We do, however, have a forthcoming proposal, funds being allocated and company involved for a cable park in the boat basin. And we would greatly appreciate it if the nwkiters would come out to show their support for the project when the time comes. _________________ Will Naito - Naito Development

Exactly the way some of there responses are you would think that the boat basin is actually their back yard. It's not the 90's anymore people come here for a lot more than just windsurfing, shit most of the visiting traffic these days is for weddings. Also look at the number of vacancy signs on motels during the summer, HR could definitely use more rooms. the iwindsurf thread would make this seem like it's some big corporate conspiracy. _________________ BIP- "YOUR GIRLFRIENDS FAVORITE" |

So, uhm, I have to say this, but it would be nice if more people would truly show that they are in support of this opportunity by actually showing up at these meetings.
Attendance at meetings shows that you support this sort of thing, both to the developers proposing this idea and to the organizations in charge of providing the permitting for the development.
The next time there is a meeting in which the Naito's are making a public presentation, I recommend that you take the time to attend, whether you have something to say or not.
This same idea goes for kiteboarding access. Numbers of bodies in attendance are tangible evidence for showing others that you care about something enough to be there. _________________ Pure Stoke Sports

Don't give the i-Windsurf thread another thought... it is just a few people and they love to bitch on that forum. I think they've got another thread that is like 5 or 6 pages long where they are arguing full force over which foot should go first into the footstraps... man, those guys must be really really bored.... |

We will be making an informative presentation to the Port of Hood River's Waterfront Recreation Committee, September 21st, at 3:45pm. Hope to see you there.
The meeting will be in the Marina Center Boardroom, 1000 E. Port Marina Drive. _________________ Will Naito - Naito Development

Dear Mr McElwee
Naito's cable 'park' is a truly lame idea totally at odds with the athleticism and outdoor challenges of the Gorge. It is an 'amusement park' type of 'ride' that belongs (if it 'belongs' anywhere) in an area where there is nothing to do and nothing to look at. The video of a dude in full kiteboarding paraphernalia being towed around by a cable is an insult to anyone who has ever taken on the wind and the waves available in the natural world. Please save us from this pathetic travesty.
I took a look at the video posted on the Kite Forum. I can't believe people are excited about a tacky, lame, amusement park type of 'ride' here in the Gorge. Doh...... we have REAL wind, mountains and plenty of thrills. If you like this type of c#$%^p move to New Jersey ! GAHHHHHH

On a recent visit to Florida I visited a Cable Park in the middle of the week. I was pretty amazed at the scene. Most of the riders were not tourist at what you call a theme park but young riders pushing each other at something positive. These riders ranged in age from 12 to 18. They most likely came there every day after school and rode for a couple of hours. This sport is growing and accessible to a wide range of riders not just ones that can afford to Kite or Windsurf.
In addition this Park can only help the Gorge attract tourist business. Our town thrives on Summer traffic. If you think otherwise you probably are not here in January. I know a lot of people that would choose here over another wind destination due to the Cable Park. No skunked days.
If you are concerned about the look of the area I would consider the current state and the alternative. Currently the area is a dump... literally. There is a mound of dirt, a fire hazard of a building, broken down docks and a eye sore of a gas station. I think this project will do a lot for the look and feel of the waterfront.
Just my two cents.
Cheers,
