Came upon the scene a few minutes after it happened. Car was traveling back from Reeder beach area and went strait at the first right turn of the double 90 degree turn section. Launched strait off the berm into the field.

This happened literally about 50 yards in front of me. I pulled over immediately to check to see if they were ok. Luckily a doctor was on site. Two others called 911 and I attempted but was put on hold. Not sure how they missed that turn. They were airborne dukes of hazard style. Two of the girls looked pretty bad... I think more in shock. Luckily plenty were there to assist. I felt I could't assist more than what others were doing already, so I left to go ride.

Yesterday's evening session was awesome! Felt bad for all those that left and missed it!
Towards the end the current was a issue though.

I've seen the aftermath of three of those accidents happen right at the exact same spot over the years.

And I once witnessed a car fail to make the first left hand sweeper as you leave the paved parking area headed toward portland, get airborne on the berm and land flipped upside down. Drunk kids. Amazingly, no one was hurt, but they were busted big time and messed up their (parents?) car.

I drove by right after it happened. Based on which sign they hit (You know, one of those big yellow ones with the arrow in the middle of it telling you which way to turn), where the car ended up in the field, and the trail made through the berm/grassy field; I don't think it was a matter of missing the turn, more of taking it way too fast. The sign that was taken out was at the exit of the turn, so they were most of the way through the turn when they ended up going off road. It seems to me its a case of fast car+over confident driving abilities= crash. I'm not saying mistakes and accidents don't happen...But this is seems like a totally self caused crash....The cops thought this as well and cited them for it... Maybe Im a jerk, but Ive had a really good friend seriously injured and almost killed by another drivers stupidity in an auto accident. While I'm glad all are all right, I offer no sympathy for people who have no care on the road and end up hurting themselves. Im really just happy there wasn't an on coming car for them to hit head on, hurting or killing someone out of their carelessness. If it was timed it differently, it could have easily been one of us being hit head on getting killed, instead of getting a killer session.

Absolutely. Or a biker, or a runner... If you want to be a race car driver, go to PIR. Don't risk other's lives with your stupidity. Idiots like this should see a year of jail and forfeit their license for five years.

Nak,
I hope you are joking about the year in jail because I don't want to pay for their mistakes. I would say more but don't want to hijack the thread...

Nak,
While I completely agree with the opinion on shitty drivers and lawlessness. This morning's financial news tells me that we're going to need to empty out our costly jails/prisons and invest in ankle bracelets. What's a year in jail cost? $40K?
Either this or come after my Social Security check. Sad

(edit)
Oops... thread hijacked

(2nd edit)
Nak.. I think I'll just change my signature settings to yours since it seems I'll never get my CGKA avatar sticky, no matter how many times I join.

I'm not sure this is a thread hijack, as it relates directly to the original post. But it really isn't about stoke or kiteboarding, so I'll just explain myself and leave it at that. I'm more than happy to talk about it over a beer or PM, but I won't post after this...

I know, but I've had buddies pay a lot more than 40k because of morons like this. Trust me, the cost to society these guys cost is a lot more than 40k a year. Way more. Going to two funerals caused by bozos over the years and watching a buddies orphans and widow grieve has left me with zero sympathy.

Dude, I apologize! My own Avatar lacks the seal, and I'm on the board! Embarassed I hope you'll forgive our error. There's been so much going on, and everyone on the board wants to ride, that some of the smaller stuff is getting missed. We've got some great folks on the board though who are working on improving the whole membership system. Once done, stuff like this shouldn't fall through the cracks.

Hyjack away guys. Post wasn't really kiting or stoke related anyway. You all have valid points.

My intent was to bring awareness to the dangerous 90 degree turns on the Sauvie Island road. Drive a safe speed and watch out for knuckleheads, especially in those turns.

OK here I go ,
I was a young guy too and did some crazy shit . Peer pressure , showing off for whatever reason .
Mostly just being young and without life experience !
Life experience .
Now theres a statement we may want to think about for a moment , done , times up .
We all have it but it takes time .
I wont do what I used to do with a motor vehicle because of my experiences . Yes I drank and drove and had a dam good time doing it . Barn dances in the country , bush parties , etc. We all did it .
Until
We grew up , Laws ! Man it costs a lot to drink let alone the fine and they take your booze away . Nowadays licences too and bigger fines .
We had a few wrecks that cost us money but no loss of life , we were indestructible .
My buddy rolled his car at a barn dance , we laughed our asses off . I rolled my car at a bush party , we laughed again .
A few years go by and ...
I was in Montana whooping it up with buddies on bikes and ..........
He had just married in October and we were in Montana for Canada days May long weekend . Pissed as usual , drinking all day at bars along the way . Glen had had enough and was returning to camp when ..... a head on and death instantly .
I was with a gal that I met that night , we were in lust that night until I high sided and broke my neck she broke her ankle .
Oh what a good time .
I still drive like an animal at times but in a controlled area and NO liquor .
I taught my daughter to drive in strange conditions too , took her on the lake and spin outs were dealt with etc all kinds of conditions to get her some experience for the real thing . It paid off , she's a good driver and doesn't drink . I'm quite sure as she can always call , no matter , no foul !
I was a hypocrite for some time telling her as a child don't do what dad does but that changed by the time she was 10ish .
I had to grow up and could not deny what I was doing was not in the best interest for my girl . ( I was a single parent dad with no help )
Experience is the best ,
teach your kids how to drive in controlled situations of wet roads and spins and how to control them . teach them where to look while driving as the car will follow ( spot your landing sounds familiar) They can't know without it what to do . You cant just TELL them how to do a handle pass and loop they have to experience it .
That is the biggest problem I see on the road today , a lack of knowledge in driving skills .
It's up to Parents or a school to teach these things .
I sure didn't want my girl to go in blind .
Shes been called a Tom at times but cmon when the rails and boxes were set up at the park at our local little hill she was one of the only girls to do them and it gave other girls confidence .
When she drives off today I don't worry about her ability on the road like the teens in this story . Shes not perfect don't get me wrong but I had to teach her some skills and it sounds like thats what may have helped prevent accidents like this .
So rather than bash the youngens think what your children may need to learn and realize it's up to you to get them taught . ( Don't get me wrong , some of them need a good bashing too )
Oh and Im happy to hear it's only property and feelings that were hurt here .( reported they will be allright )

Right on Jack!!! I couldn't agree more. My 'pops unit' forced all of us to drive a clutch when learning how to drive (and of course the first place we stopped was on the steepest hill in Portland)! Then as winter came along...we spent our time sideways, backwards, forwards, and doing cookies in quite a few parking lots (of course, with every different car we drove, we found it necessary to get it sideways?!)! The glory years :-)

Cars are still moving missiles, and I'm reminded of this every day at my work place...so in the end it's all a calculated risk - not if, but when?

Most of us learn the hard way! We are all teenagers once!
