Every wonder how the Hanford nuclear plant upstream from Hood River affects us all?

There's a super important public hearing tomorrow in Hood River, July 26th, on the matter, and a second meeting in Portland on July 27th.

Please spread the word and make it to the meeting. The river is in dire need of our support.

A pivotal issue of the meeting is as follows:
"Should highly radioactive Cesium, Plutonium and chemicals in liquid waste discharge trenches, cribs and drains be covered under dirt, as USDOE proposes, or cleaned up by removing, treating and disposing deep underground?"

Info on time and location of meeting follows. If you are behind supporting this cause, help spread the word too, by posting on Facebook, Twitter, etc.

Hope to see strong support from the kiteboarding community at the Best Western on Tuesday night.

HEY EVERYBODY (bump), THIS IS IMPORTANT!!!

We play in this water daily, and I am sure most of us would like to continue to do so for a long time without growing an additional limb. Lets make an impact!

Sorry to write 3 posts in a row...

I'm not sure what the intention is as a whole for our group. If we come off being a bunch of angry/loud left wing tree huggers with no facts...this is all for not. Science rules. This is Dr. Bill's article that you may want to check out. Just so you know where he stands. Who is Dr. Bill? Nuclear physisist - PHD. in the 70's who worked for the gov. developing nuclear weapons. He is well read and is a science guru. He now has a syndicated radio talk show.

Even though radioactive waste occurs naturally...my question would be how does the intensity or concentration effect the environment? A fart doesn't smell as bad from across the room, but is terrible when your right next to it. Sorry to be gross - but good analogy, eh?

Gotta Run! Gotta Kite!

This is REALLY important!!

Be there and provide public testimony if they allow it. If its a public listening session, there will be a sign-up when you walk-in. Everyone should do this. You usually only get 2-3 minutes a public meetings and all you have to do is SPEAK FROM YOUR HEART!

Introduce who you are, where you leave. Briefly state what kiteboarding and other waters sports and recreation activities do for the local economy, then let'm have it.

We don't want nuclear waste in our water-ways!!

But wouldn't the extra radioactivity help sterilize the raw sewage out at Sauvie Island?

Gotta look for the silver lining....

(and before people wig, that was intended as a JOKE)

Yeah it could? But don't think Sauvie Island is the only source of raw sewage... Last Year Mabton, Wa Dumped 370,000 Gallons of raw sewage into the Yakima River and did not tell the Public for two weeks. Ooops, I believe the Yakima then dumped into the Columbia.

How about all the fertilizer thats dumped due to agriculture? What is worse?

i just got out of the meeting. great to see a couple wind sport folk there.

it is NUTs what is going on out at hanford!

there is enough "leakage" in the soil to power 70 atomic bombs. some of the leakage is 110 feet below the official burial zone.

the contaminated plutonium soil could leech into the groundwater, then the columbia.

there is another meeting tomorrow in portland. i encourage everyone who shares the columbia water to attend and be heard. the current Department of Energy strategy proposed is to remove only 2 feet of dirt and bury the rest.

we need to remove/treat/dispose the problem, not bury it.

we can hold them accountable but the time to do it is now- i urge everyone to attend and voice your concerns.
