Anybody have any idea if it's going to be impossible to get a campsite at Gnat Creek or anywhere else around Jones Beach over the 4th? Gnat creek is no reservation, so I don't want to show up with the family and gear, just to find out there is nowhere to sleep...

I'm crossing my fingers the wind will blow....

You can camp right on Jones beach without any reservation or having to beat someone to a spot, but there are no facilities, bathrooms, or garbage cans. There will probably be tons of ATVers - so very noisy. I am thinking the same thing as you though - camping somewhere near Jones would be cool.

Can you legally camp at the launch? I would be happy to do it alone in the trees, but would rather be camping legally with the fam.

So, is it not very family friendly with all the ATV's if they want to spend the day there at the shore?

Do the ATVs stick to a certain area, or are they going to be buzzing around them no matter where they set up?

It's my first time to Jones, so your knowledge is appreciated!

At jones there is a large sandy area where the ATV's run and then there is a fairly significant dip down to the "Shore". The burm is about 3 feet tall and the shore is only 5-10 feet wide at the moment. All the ATV stay up on the soft loose sand in the big open area. See diagram. As long as you stay in the green area you shouldn't be bothered by ATV's (other than the noise).

Green = family safe
Yellow = 4x4 vehicles and ATV
Blue = concrete parkinglot

Here is the Google maps link for Jones Beach so you can see it yourself: http://maps.google.com/maps?q=Clatskanie,+OR&hl=en&ll=46.139686,-123.30265&spn=0.012028,0.027874&sll=45.712481,-122.877206&sspn=0.024243,0.055747&t=h&z=16

I took my first lessons last year at Jones beach 4th of July weekend. I did not camp there, but I remember lots of people camping. Most of them were there to play with ATVs. There were tons of families and kids running around on ATVs. But I did not stay past dark to see what it was like for sleeping. I think there is camping at the city park in Clatskanie 4th weekend and there are several other campgrounds in the area. You may want to check out Jones first and survey the situation. If it doesn't look "right" for your family - then check out some of the other options close by.

Hi ,
Jones is awesome , quads stir up the dust and are loud but the place is free for all to use and enjoy . And enjoy you will as it's a great place to kite .
I was there again end of April and the three picnic tables were pretty much destroyed and on tilt . Clatsakanie is close and has all you need .
Family friendly , Hmmmm I guess it is as I have seen them there every time I have been . There was Cousin Jed , Jethro , Ellie May , .......'Laughing' Take it easy just kidding .
Get up wind and backside of the Island and enjoy some flat water and fun big swells Wa. side too .
I was there for the July 4 festivities , I think year before last , anyway the July 2 morning I used the empty fireworks containers to mark out my line zone and got some thumbs up from the still intoxicated quadders , it helped them see !!
Have fun .

I'm hittin coast on Fri, Jones on Saturday and some sweet forcast lookin coasties on Sunday and Monday and Tues! 6ft swell and 20-25knots has my name all over it!!!

You can also camp at the far far west end of Jones past the wave break, is safe from high tide other than you cant drive in or out at high tide Sad, but its quiet, secluded and away form the drunk ATV punks....

It is going to be a packed weekend at Jones. ATV's fireworks and just found out last night they have extended sturgeon season from ending today to now its end of JULY!!!! Son of a *it*h!! So expect a shit load of fisherman.... I was so looking forward to them being gone this weekend eerrr.......

After the 4th I always spend 3 hours and 3 garbage bags of cleanup at Jones. Why the hell people can't pick up after themselves is beyond me. My 3 yr old picks up better than they do!!!
Anyone can help out if you come to Jones, just bring a small garbage bag and spend 5 minutes picking up the area around you before you hit the water. Will save your feet and most importantly your kite!
I always find burnt beer cans with sharp edges, pointy fireworks remains, broken glass ect... Every little bit helps.

If all you experts will help a kook get oriented and help with a launch or two, I'd be happy to bring two bags for drunk ATV'er clean up. Smile
