Now can we get the thread back to its original intent. A reminder that the currents are dangerous right now and that you should be extra cautious around the mouth of the river. |
Dude, your board leash is more dangerous than the rivers current!!!

The big reason you should keep using is so that when your board eventually hits you in the head puts a huge gash in your noggin we can all say "I told you so". I'm sure your flimsy water helmet will prevent any injury from a 7lb board traveling 30 mph. |
lol. I love your people skills!

use a gojoe.
Easy to retrieve the board as the wind helps . Spotting it is easier too .

This one will cost you only $4, sold at all Home Depots, Works just like the original. Looks very cool.
There is no excuse left for anyone using a board leash. This is not a joke. NoJoes will save your board!

FYI - I went to Home Depot to get a "$4 GoJoe" and they didn't have any tubes at all! They only sell solid nylon tires now for wheelbarrows........ LOL (at least at the one in Clackamas)

You are right. I see Ace has in store for just under $7, and online for $4

You asked for the wrong thing. You need to tell them you are looking for a portable glory hole.

I wish someone would explain to me why you all have such strong feelings about leashes when none of you care one whit about: helmets, impact vests, or PFDs and only some of you care about kite knives.
I'm taking the damn thing off my harness now so you can all get your panties out of the twist they are in and let it drop.

Always amazes me when someone who's been kiting for a relatively short time gives advice, or totally ignores advice about this sport.
Good on ya F-one, can't do much more than get the info out.

To put this (2011 non-issue) in perspective, for me this issue was settled 11 years ago. ...It's literally been 11 years since I received stitches in the head as a result of a board leash. When I look at the photo and I look about 20 years younger, it seems like a lot longer ago. ...I figured I'd show a little vulnerability before I say something in a blunt fashion: ...actually, while I was trying to find a diplomatic way of saying it, the Dangler said it for me. Thank you.

I'm perfectly willing to listen to well reasoned arguments and hear alternatives that I might not have been aware of like heel straps. But someone creating a brand new account and using 9 exclamation points in only 4 sentences to tell me how damn stupid I am is neither a well reasoned argument or an alternative I can use. Most of the rest of the posts in this thread aren't much better than that.
The people who mentioned heel straps and Kip are giving me information I can use. The rest of you are being self righteous asses; and inconsistent at that. If you want to champion kite safety by all means go for it but at least be consistent. The way you all talk about leashes you would think I was kiting with a bomb strapped to my chest.

I have never understood peoples need to spread the word on leashes
when they don't seem to have the urge to spread the word on helmets pfds the proper wetsuit etc. when I started everyone had leashes and kites that did not depower and I saw very few accidents. I don't wear a leash very often(retractable leash for when the kite goes down or drift launching. or for rideing strapless on waves with no sandy beach)

I don't believe we've met.
tried giving you another alternative to using a leash.
not sure if you took lessons locally or not.
either way, you probably were not taught using a board leash.
I don't know of any schools that still teach with a leash.
btw, I come on nwkite for some kite stoke and to see how my friends are faring down in hood, and most of the time I see a post by you.
maybe you could ease up on those typing fingers and give this stuff some thought.
We all know how it is to get pumped up and enthusiastic about the sport. some more than others.
anyhow, just maybe take it down a notch.

Sorry to detract more from your thread Youkai, but since this has turned into a "leash bash" I figured I would ask this question. I am not judging - I am just trying to learn. I am a newb in my second season. I do not have a leash. I do not even have a board right now since I lost it to the Columbia current a few weeks ago. I am just trying to figure out what I want to do so that I dont lose my next board. I have already been working more on better body dragging. I figure I will probably use a NoJoe as shown above for this summer until the currents slow down and I get better at body dragging.
Here is my question - is it fairly standard to wear a leash when kiting with a surfboard in waves? Several I have talked to say that they usually kite with a leash in that situation. Mitu is kiting with a leash in this video below when he is wearing straps. How is this situation different? Why wouldn't the board rocket towards your head in this senario? FYI - I wear helmet, PFD, rescue knife, and rescue whistle everytime.
