Wed May 25, 11 4:00 pm Great idea for a race-HR to Stevenson and back. |
|

It seems to me that with all this water/current in the Columbia and everyone riding surfboards, it's a great time to stage a race from Hood River to Stevenson and back.
Just think, no shuttles, 36miles of beautiful swell, and no water skis.

that is a terrible idea. there's already the blowout and wind variation from Hood River to Stevenson has a very wide range

Hood River to Viento and back would be far enough to offer a good challenge with reasonably consistent winds and the best swells in the Western Gorge.
Might as well open it up to kites, windsurfers, and sailboats for a fun rivalry.

and do it on a east wind to west wind switch day. ride downwind from HR to Stevenson, plop your kite in the water for an hour or two, and then ride back downwind to HR. also, there will be a shuttle bus waiting at rowena for people who want to go a little further.

I agree with the 'terrible idea' comment.
Viento maybe.
Not Stevenson.
Do the math.

This reminds me of my Kiteforum days when I got in an argument with RickI about "upwinders" ... he was like "upwinders are the greatest thing ever"
I think that's when I stopped reading Kiteforum, maybe now nwkite has jumped the shark?

Phil, NWKook jumped on the bandwagon quite some time ago.

Don't let all the negative comments discourage you. Great ideas come from people that can rise above "group think".
You brought up an idea to take advantage of the current (no pun intended) conditions. It is probably a one time shot or at least not an every season opportunity
Maybe a better variation is make it an endurance competition. who can go the farthest upwind and return. Any good contest needs a reward and bragging rights too. it would not be for everyone just like other styles of kiting, but, just as legit.

Just do it. You don't need a race and entry fees and event insurance.
Just do it - take pics and then tell us how much fun you had.
If you want company - I'll go as far as Viento, maybe further if the wind is perfect.
